Can I hook my cable modem to one NIC and my home network to the other? Is it simple IP passthru or do I have to use ICS - was that even available in Win2K Server?
You can hook your cable modem to one NIC and your home network to the other NIC, but your home network won't have Internet access unless you also use ICS. In my opinion, using ICS is a very bad idea. It would be a much better setup to get a broadband router and keep a single NIC in all machines.
You can also run Network Address Translation (NAT) on the server to do the same thing as ICS, but a little more stable and secure. Then run a firewall product (ZoneAlarm, BlackIce, whatever you perfer) for security.
Yes it is possible, I would recommend using ICS or if you got the money ISA server 2000. (if you have to use a windows product)
If you want just a basic router go buy a SOHO linksys or netgear.
On the otherside if you are not tied to a windows os on this machine download www.smoothwall.org and set that up on any machine with two nics, it is an elaborate free firewall / gateway.
