Go into device manager, open disk drives and open your SSD. Go into the details tab and change the property to hardware Ids. The last values on the end of the strings will be the firmware.

The above is how is works on Windows 7, I haven't used Windows 8 yet so don't know where device manager is or whether it even looks the same.

Here is what I see: SCSI\DiskSamsung_SSD_840_PRO_SeriDXM0

They only showing part of the firmware code!

840 SSD - 120 GB.

Here is another data point. 1 week running 24/7 with no issues. I am on very old equipment. AMD Opteron 170 / DFI NF4 LanParty Expert motherboard. Did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro.

Firmware DXT06B0Q.

Just curious to see who else has the 840 SSD or 840 Pro and seeing the failures as describe on this thread.

We now have an 840 Pro with the new firmware as well, lets see if we can kill that one...

Safe to assume it's still running strong since there haven't been any updates to say otherwise?

I've got one being shipped to me now, bought it before reading this thread. I think I'll hold off unpackaging and installing it until I feel a little more confident in it. Being a "normal" user I'm sure it'll be fine, it'd take me years to do what you're doing in a few days, but I'd still like to know. I owned a couple of the infamous Deskstar (aka Deathstar) drives many years ago (what was that, around 2000?), no desire to have a repeat of that nonsense.

You don't really need one, especially if it's a desktop. I have my SSDs just lying on the floor when testing them, makes it easiest to swap them.

Thank You! I really though I needed one because of vibration...but is flash storage :whiste:

Per Samsung installation instructions; install in W7 compatibility mode which is what I did and it seems to work OK.

From Anand's OCZ Vector review:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6363/ocz-vector-review-256gb/10

"Should OCZ be able to deliver Samsung-like performance and reliability, then I'll really be impressed."

Since both Samsung 840 Pro drives Anand had received for testing failed within weeks, his new statement makes so sense whatsoever.
Unfortunately it is your statement which makes no sense. If you had read the whole of this thread you would see that review samples and advanced samples shipped with firmware DXM02B0Q. This firmware was shown to have a bug in it and which was corrected in DXM03B0Q. It has been confirmed that no retail 840 Pro's were sold with DXM02B0Q.

It has also been confirmed in this thread that manufacturers use review sites and advanced samples as a final form of testing before going to sale. As a bug was discovered during this period, it was corrected and re-tested to ensure it did not make it out to retail customers. Samsung have to be praised for this and it is something OCZ could have learned from long ago. Lets hope the Vector is the new leaf we all hope.

This thread should be closed. It adds no value and is doing nothing but confusing people. Anandtech tested with a beta firmware release. Is that their fault NO. But they should have added that to the preamble i.e. THIS TEST IS NOT REALLY VALID, WE TESTED WITH BETA FIRMWARE.

As for the guy on Hard OCP, he's just another poster on a forum. Means nothing to me.

I've been running reliable 24/7 on a workstation for 3 weeks now. NO ISSUES. Thus far this drive has been nothing short of fantastic. As reliable as my old X25, which is not something I can say about the Intel 520, which was absolutely terrible.

If I were seeing widespread reports of failures from a multitude of sources then I'd be concerned about this drive. I'll be hanging on to my 840 pro.

I have read every message in the thread, and must have missed anything about Samsung or Anand confirming a bug in the pre-release firmware. Would you please point me to the post.

This says actually nothing. The reviewers perform stress-tests that simulate one years usage in a week. Your drive working for 3 weeks under normal circumstances says nothing about the reliability. It may very well fail within the first year of usage.

Really Shark? First post? Work for OCZ much? Good grief.

I'm reading Anandtech since at least 10 years, and rely on the reviews (with the exception of GPU testing) as recomendations for hardware we use in our company. I think the 840 Pro review is a fiasco. Two drivers failing should be mentioned in the beginning as an edit, or in a separate article (as was done for other SSDs!!). I would have never recommended buying the 840 Pro if I knew all the facts.

So you do work for OCZ. Got it.

There have been ZERO reported failures of any kind with the RETAIL 840 Pro drives.

Give it up - we know what you're doing here.

I've been beating my 840 pro pretty hard the last few days. I've filled it manually a few times and I've also run 3 full disk encryption routines and benchmarked them all.

Over at HardOCP the guy who had 4 of the pre-retail drives fail has been beating up a retail drive for about 9 days now with no reports of failure (his last post 2 days ago).

So it's not enough data to confirm the fix, but in his words, things are off to a better start. That combined with all the other reports I've been reading leads me to feel pretty good right now about the 840 pro issue. There haven't been any reports of retail units failing yet and that is significant.

Both of our 840 Pros had the firmware DXM02B0Q in them, just got a confirmation from Anand. That's not to say that the retail units are issue-free, but they do have a newer firmware that supposedly fixes the issues we've been having.

We now have an 840 Pro with the new firmware as well, lets see if we can kill that one...

That's all for the Intel SSD update. I've been hearing more reports of dying Samsung SSD 840 Pros and I believe I know the cause (firmware related, should be fixed in the latest shipping revision) but I'm still waiting for confirmation on one last thing before explaining what's going on there.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6462/intel-explains-20nm-nand-endurance-concerns-on-the-ssd-335

Obviously we can't say that the retail firmware is bug-free but we now know for a fact that all failed units carried an older firmware.

We've used OCZ drivers several years ago. After some have failed we have decided to move to Intel, after Anand recommended it due to reliatibility. Now we were in the process of upgrading, and the initial decision was going to the Samsung 840 Pro. We've stopped after replacing 10 drives, and are waiting now. Again - I have read every post in this thread and have seen 0 responses from either Anand or Samsung with definite aknowledgements of any firmware issue, or a bug that was fixed. All this is still a mystery, and I hope for some official word. What stays is that several drives that have been put to a worst case endurance test for several weeks have failed. We don't know more yet.

There's no mystery here. Again, we all know what you're doing.

10 failed retail drives? Really? A nice, magic round number 10? C'mon dude. Care to back that up with ANY kind of proof in your 5th post?

We have no failed drives so far. We have replaced 10 Intel SSDs with Samsung, and stopped further replacement until some official word is spoken about this issue.
