From what I understood, they were NOT releasing a final big-ass set with any additional extras. I'll try to confirm...

Yea...and Disney says it's the last chance every time they release a disney title. Then....they release it again, and again, etc. I'm sure they'll be a big final set, but I doubt there will be anything that significant over all three of the extended versions. The main thing about them in my book is the extra footage that wasn't shown in the first release. If they add even more footage in a big-ass set down the road, I'll just be buying it for the third time (regular, extended, box set). It could be a modern day Pickwick papers (sp?) from Charles Dickens. He sold the same story three time to the same audience.

I read some theatres are having a special night where they are going to screen FOTL extended addition followed by TTT extended edition right before the ROTK release.

Yeah in selected theaters around the U.S.

They're releasing FOTR extended in theaters for a week starting Dec 5 I believe, then TTT extended for the week after that, culminating in a marathon FOTR - TTT - ROTK on the day before ROTK is released. That's a long day of moviewatching!

The Uptown here in D.C. has them, it's a totally kickass theater. I have tickets already for FOTR and TTT, I couldn't handle the marathon though.

HEY FOLKS, I went to Suncoast yesterday 'cos I had a gift certificate, and though they have TTT Extended listed as $29.99, it rang up $22.99. Very hot deal...I've not found it cheaper anywhere else. The cashier said this was not unusual!

North American DVD had the Gift Set for $39.99 a while back, I don't know if they are still doing that though. If you buy the gift set and the theatrical cut you get a $10 rebate. Return of the King comes out Dec. 17, but I am seeing it at 10 p.m. Dec. 16 on Trilogy Tuesday along with FOTR and TTT extended editions earlier in the day. Sure it will be a long day, but who could pass up the opportunity to see the greatest movie ever made all in one sitting on the big screen?

They are doing that here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. However tickets have been sold out for weeks, getting required bracelets etc. If you dont have tickets now, you are not going. (unless they give some away on the radio, but I dont think they are going to )

Anyway I have my tickets so yay.

I stopped at Suncoast yesterday, price is $29.99, anything cheaper must have been for the non extended version.

I think a box set of all three movies in the Extended Edition must be in the works, especially with the ROTK theatrical cut being released in May with a EE coming out in the fall, which makes a Christmas 2004 release of a box set a definite possibility. Haven't heard any confirming rumors yet, but placing the ROTK DVD release dates about three months earlier in the year than the first two movies makes you wonder if they are planning something for next holdiay season but are keeping quiet so as not to hurt the sales of the DVDs that have already been released.

If they do release a box set I have a feeling that it will probably be the exact same thing they are selling right now, just packaged together, so a 12 disc set. They have said before that every edition they produce will be completely different and worth buying even if you own the previous versions. I don't think they have time to make a completely different edition by next year already. The reason the DVDs may be released early next year is probably because they don't have another movie coming out next Christmas that they are working on so they can focus on the DVDs more.

Those of you that have McD $$s... seems you're limited to 6 BBY$. $24.99-6= 18.99

If you don't have a BBY, hate BBY, or whatever... CC also has it for the same friggin price... $24.99 B&M

Yep, that's what I meant...and I got it on Thursday!!! BTW, I am not going to watch it until the theatrical release of the TT ExEd hits the theater in early Dec.

I definitely think you're right that the earlier release has to do with there not being another movie coming out in the theatre next December, but I don't think it has anything to do with them being able to 'focus' on the DVD more.

My guess is they could've pumped these things out months earlier had they wanted to. But why put them out in June when you can wait until a month before the next movie comes out, and everyone gets all pumped up about the next LotR coming out in theatres, and then feed off that by releasing the last movie on DVD. I'm much more interested in re-watching TT now that RotK is so close than I was months ago.

Next year there's no new movie, so there's no point in waiting.
