I'll answer that for myself.

Lots of reasons. A son just entering college (still 17) that we'd like to stay near; my wife's realty-based businesses including a bunch of owned properties; my job of 20 years, though of course I'd look for a new one; my brother and an 80+ year old mom I'm helping out with (and she helps us out!); my band of 12 years (don't laugh, it's my one refuge of fun and sanity!).

I absolutely detest Desantis and the people that support what he's about. This state is full of racist rednecks and terrified boomers and people my age (gen x). I'm very glad my sons got through school here before this movement to whitewash history and inject Christian right-wing nonsense into classes (and reject and outlaw diversity and climate change science) really got moving.

I hate the weather here though the winters are pleasant. Heading in for another skin cancer surgery today as it happens.

However, I live in a county that went (barely) for Biden. And other "blue" states I'd like to move to have their own "sea of red" outside the urban centers. I've seen a huge confederate flag on a house in upstate NY. My evangelical relatives in MN LOVE Desantis and I remember them telling my mom they wish he was *their* governor. In short, I can find "Florida Man" everywhere. I could move to New England and be surrounded by maga rubes in the neighborhood I end up in. I work with, and play music with, sane people (we've had a couple right wingers in the band but we keep a strict no-politics unstated golden rule and it's served use well. stick to music)

I'm still intending to retire up north though. At that point a lot of my reasons for staying will be gone.

I'm a little surprised by this. While I don't doubt you're dislike of the state, or the issues you have with it, I have to wonder why you stay in a place you hate when you appear to have the means to move?
The wife and I both work in manned spaceflight. Where else are we going to do that, Florida? That’s trading a turd burger for a shit sandwich.

We’ll likely buy property in another state when we retire.

I live in sonoma county and very much on the edge of suburban/rural. I only have to drive a few minutes to see giant trump flags/banners flying proudly. Two weeks ago a bunch of Kennedy supporters were flying his banner on a 101 overpass. There is a huge amount of liberal/conservative co-mingling.

Greenman pretty much did the same thing IIRC, weird that you needed to explain this.

Maybe you can move in next to Greenman in whatever shithole state he chose

FL is already seeing somewhat less of an influx, not the least due to insurance costs (if you can even get insurance). Landlords have to pass that cost on to renters.

We own one property up in NC and the tax and insurance costs are FAR lower than in FL. I'd consider moving there but they are only marginally better of a government than Florida's, and the weather is still pretty hot there. I figure, go big or stay home when it comes to moving.

As climate change (shhhhhh, don't tell Desantis I said the c-word) keeps ramping up hurricane strength in the years ahead, I don't see this improving. We are already discussing selling our FL properties earlier than we might have, though none are on the coast thankfully. But you don't have to go underwater to be affected by climate changes.

Yeah, rising secondary costs (insurance) are really going to put a hurt on growth in FL.

Along with some other things ...

I see. I had similar problem when I lived in the Bay Area. All of my business was concentrated in one small community and walking away from that and starting over just wasn't happening. I didn't hate where I lived, but I was certainly growing tired of it. We got lucky and stumbled onto an area that we really like, then found a house we loved just before buying one that was acceptable.
Good luck with life until retirement.

History hasn't been whitewashed already in Florida? I remember in Texas in highschool in the 90s our history books were such whitewashed bullshit.
