she was making "purple drank?"

that's a urban legend, nobody does that.. purple drank is actually slang for codeine + promethazine cough syrup, an opiate+anti histamine cough syrup, that for some reason, they decided to make taste like absolute candy.. if you've ever tried it, you'd know, it's actually hilarious that drug companys would flavor an opiate drug syrup like a child's candy, it literally tastes like candy...

even crazier is there's another syrup by the name "tussinex" which is hydrocodone+chlerphernermine (again opiate +antihistamine, hydrocodone is stronger than codeine however) and just like the "purple drank" syrup, it too, is hilarilously candy flavored as well, some tropical orange flavor...

it was made popular in the houston and dallas texas areas by local rappers who became insanely famous for rapping about consuming the opiate drug syrup, it was quickly diverted to the streets and sold on the black market accross the nation, and still is, to this day.

i would imagine she was an opiate addict, was out, popped a ton of tylenol in attempt to ease withdrawal symptoms and that was that..... someone should have given her an opiate prescription years ago, or methadone maintainence treatment, she'd probably still be alive..

I had a young relative die from acetaminophen overdose about 6 years ago, although at the time I did not know thats what did it. She was a drug addict and had been putting Nyquil into various alcoholic drinks (making "grape drank", etc).

Erm... so, she was a drug addict, and you thought you would do a PSA about how people abuse tylenol.

Newsflash, anything can be abused.

2 Extra-Strength Tylenols every 6 hours is 4000 mg. Easy to overdo that dosage.
Worse when you realize that maximum dose can be as little as 3g after drinking. 2 before bed to head off the hangover at the pass, two when you wake up and two more when those don't work... toxicity reached

Tylenol does nothing for me.

Ibuprofen on the other hand gives me a buzz, and happens to take care of my migraines too. Unfortunately because of the frequency I take them I'll likely end up with a stroke.

That said, every medication has "side effects" up to and including death.

Tylenol would probably never be accepted today. Too much money in it to lose that.

This is a P&N topic.

Him saying Grape Drank has me thinking he doesn't care about that young relative that is now dead.

I thought Tylenol overdose was well known? You ESPECIALLY do not take it with alcohol. Tylenol as well as NSAIDs can be bad on your kidneys/liver in high dosage.

Many have taken it with alcohol and lived.

I don't think you are understanding this, but thanks for sharing a rare post.

Now I'm glad I rarely take any, even when i have a hangover. My grandmother gets tons of it, she gave me a giant bottle of 500mg tablets when I told her I had none left...all I really wanted was like 10-20, which would be good for a few years at the rate I take em. Now I'm probably good for the rest of my life

Um I thought it was common knowledge that acetaminophen is relatively easy to OD on, let alone when mixing it with other stuff.

Also, I wouldn't go over 3000mg a day if taking it more long-term, just to be easier on your liver and such.

I'm never thirsty with a hangover though. So I take a 1/4tsp of salt, THEN I get thirsty, then I feel better.

I guess alcohol makes you dump all your sodium/water by inhibiting ADH. Water is only half the problem. Even if you are dehydrated you need water + electrolytes. Something like Gatorade, while better than water isn't really what you need since its not potassium you depleted but plain ole sodium.

Nonsense. Take a quart of cold Gatorade, pour out about 12 ounces out of it (or save for later), top off with vodka out of the freezer....when finished...move on to next bottle

The thing about tylenol is that it's effects are cumulative in terms of dosing. Most people don't realize that, and that's why it's so damn easy to OD on it.

The other thing that most parents don't realize is that the oral suspensions for infants/childrens are not the same dosages and most idiot parents don't pay attention to this. The other thing about oral suspension they don't do is shake the hell out of them, especially the infant ones with the little bulb dropper. They just suck it up straight from the bottom where all the active acetaminophen has settled out to.

Yeah... duh.

Yes, acetaminophen can be very dangerous due to liver poisoning, especially when combined with alcohol.

I like beer, and I like having a liver, so I never take acetaminophen.

acetaminophen is much more dangerous than most prescription drugs or controlled substances. You can't get high off of it, and it's old timey, so it's OTC.

I can't be the only person offended that she would mix Nyquil with alcohol to make 'lean'.

Also, promethazine is aanti-nausea, not anti-histamine IIRC.

And, a famous Houston rapper always talking about "sippin' syrup" died from said sippin'.

A lot of medications say that on the bottle. Including ones where the potential risk is very low. It's a boy-who-cried-wolf scenario.

No, it really isn't. It isn't up to you to decide which drugs are dangerous.

Yea because antihistamines are also anti emetic. You can take benedryl to help with nausea. Its just a prescription strength antihistamine.

Tylenol will legitimately kill you dead via liver damage if you overdose. The LD50 isn't all that much higher than the effective dose is the issue with Tylenol. Maybe he is thinking of ibuprofen.

Tylenol was REALLY bad in 1982 when somebody was putting cyanide in it. This is why it now comes in tamper resistant tamper evident packaging.

I think I remember a news article from the UK a couple of years ago about someone who OD'd on paracetamol / tylenol. A woman had some sort of serious injury, didn't go back for another consultation and instead downed it in fairly large doses as a daily habit until she died.

Her husband/partner then tried to start some sort of awareness campaign that paracetamol in large/regular enough doses can actually kill. I wonder how many people weren't aware of it already... scary.
