On my Surface Pro 7 I am using the Type-C receptacle to feed to a port replicator where have attached a monitor. The means to do this is nice and I started wondering about how robust the Type-C replicator was and knew from the get-go that it all depends on what the thing is connected to--in this case some header on the Surface Pro 7 and it supports USB 3.1 Gen2 and DisplayPort in Alt Mode. I am quite happy with this feature and was thinking about it in a motherboard, but not on the back panel.
It isn't easy trying to figure out of said motherboards of choice have a USB 3.1 header and then trying to determine if it is Gen 1 or 2, and then trying to figure out if the chipset making this happens also supports Alt Mode (DisplayPort). And Jesus, we haven't even implemented 2x2 on Gen2, of chatted about Thunderbolt3 (which I care not unless its also on the motherboard.
So the question comes how does one research a collection of motherboards and easily reduce said collection to those that support USB3.1 Gen2 on a header, if it is handled directly by the CPU (e.g. lane from the AM4), or the PCH? I know I could probably be quite happy with the top of the line motherbaords (e.g. Godlike) but the notion of spending $700-1K on a motherboard makes me laugh in smite.
