Pentagon confirms air strikes

U.S. warplanes on Friday struck targets in the southern Iraqi no-fly zone, NBC?s Jim Miklaszewski reported. Meanwhile, witnesses reported explosions and anti-aircraft fire in Baghdad. More details soon."

"U.S. military strike reported in southern Iraq"

Pentagon sources say U.S. warplanes pounded communications and control sites today in southern Iraq.

CNN's Jane Arraf, reporting from Baghdad, said air raid warnings went off in the city prior to the explosions. There was no immediate comment from the Iraqi government.

Baghdad radio and the Iraqi television service switched from normal programming to military music, an indication some military event took place. A period of quiet followed the air raid warnings, explosions, and anti-aircraft fire"

Hmm,

I wonder why? Have the Iraqi's done something recently they haven't done in the past? Or is it just Colin's way of saying "I'm back..."

This is a surprise.

Maybe Bush is just trying to distract the public from the real problem, learning english, just like Clinton did and in that movie wag the dog.

I surprised air raid sirens went off before the explosions. I guess they weren't using the F117. In the Gulf War, sirens would go off right after the explosions because the Iraqis had no idea the planes were coming.

Why did we bomb Iraq? Well, gee, maybe there's some classified information to which normal citizens and the meda are not privy -- ever think of that?? I could ask my father-in-law as he was almost certainly involved, but unfortunately the information is probably beyond my piddly "Secret" security clearance.

I mean, it's not like Iraq has been flagrantly violating the terms imposed by the UN after the Gulf War. No, they are upstanding members of the international community and wouldn't dream of developing chemical and biological weapons.

Are you people really that stupid?

perry: People on the border may have heard planes (or cruise missiles) flying overhead and alerted Baghdad.

It doesn't quite work that way Perry. The F-117 does not fly alone (into battle).
Standoff weapons were used because the area is heavily defended with AA sites.
One of the reasons for this strike may be the fact that Iraq has been escalating its military over the last 2 years.

My point AndrewR, is that why now? The Iraqi's have violated UN directives for the past five years. The west responded with further isolation. I simply find it interesting with Powell and Bush both involved with foreign countries right now that we chose this time to attack. I'll be watching the news, I think the answers to these questions will be interesting to say the least.

Oh, and the only thing "secret" to you is who your father is. Keep trolling piddly one!

What a better way for Bush to start his term...let Saddam know that it's gonna be a long 4 years!

The previous administration had been lax regarding keeping Saddam in his place. The Bush administration obviously won't be, which is why this was done now.

Bush is merely stating his administration's position on Iraq and making up for all the years Clinton neglected Iraq and basically let Saddam run amok. Good on Bush!

Fmr. Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleberger just said that the Clinton administration wasn't as tight as they should have been with Iraq and he hopes the Bush administration "keeps it up"

LMAO!

actually. the US did attack as they do almost everyday in the no-fly zone, but HAVE NOT flown Baghdad airstrikes. However, the Iraqi TV and radio are saying that there were airstrikes over Baghdad with 6 major explosions in the city, and even took footage of it. But, in the footage, THERE WERE NO PLANES, BOMBS, OR ROCKETS TO BE SEEN. This is just another Iraqi ploy to try to make us look like morons.

Not that I don't think Suddam is /has been asking for it, but.....

The unfortunate thing with bombs is that they sometimes find their way to the door steps of innocent civilians. Although the technoogy we use to ensure accuracy is very good, it is not 100%. I indeed hope these targets are no where near civilian homes. On the other side, Suddam has a nasty reputation of having civilians living right on top of key military facilities....

U.S. and British planes struck Iraqi air defense sites near Baghdad on Friday in response to what one Western official said was several weeks of increased aggression by Iraq. Such strikes have been common in recent years, but Friday?s was closer to Baghdad than most, with the fighter jets fired missiles above the southern no-fly zone imposed on Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War.

Doesn't sound like they are trying to make us look like morons.

gittyup - I agree with what you're saying, hopefully no civilians will be hurt but I bet Iraqi TV is getting out their makeup and dressing up civilians to look like they were hurt. I already heard that Iraqi TV was showing an injured soldier.
