ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US....LOL CG! The US Army should really make THAT their slogan instead of that lame "Army of One".

Geeez, I hope there won't be any WW 3. And if there must be, hopefully I don't have to join the army.

<< highme: Don't let a Marine aviator see you call the F/A-18 a "Navy" plane -- they'll kick your ass >>

True, however, has the USMC completely severed all ties from the USN?

LOL! Tell you what . . . walk into a bar around Camp Pendleton or Camp Lejeune, and say, "What's up, swabbies." You will probably be spending some time in the hospital. The Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy, but in their viewpoint, it's just so they can hitch a ride to the beach. (or so my dad grumbled when I asked him. )

As far as Bush being a draft dodger . . . come on Red, be consistent at least. He was born on July 6, 1946. Attended Yale from 64 to 68 (a lot of college boys never got drafted, Red - how'd you avoid going to 'nam? You're of that generation, are you not?) Bush was in the Texas Air National Guard from 68 to 73, pretty much the higher points of the war. More than likely his squadron never got rotated in, or else he would have gone. He also joined the Guard of his own volition, which is more than can be said of Clinton.

I guess the pres just introduced CP to saddam. This will do nothing but inflame the situation and draw more critisism from Arab leaders in the regeon and drive up oil prices. Brillient foreign policy our new pres has envoked. I can't wait for his next move. should be hilarious.

Athanasius, good points. I guess it's kind of a tough spot to be in, but when it comes down to it, the only result I see from sanctions and these raid missions is that Saddam is more firmly in command of the helpless Iraqi people -- and from what I hear his son (who will follow him unless there's a military intervention) is worse than he is.

Haven't we learned from Cuba that making the country poor and isolating it through sanctions does NOT help get rid of the dictator? Castro has been there for generations, and he'll probably outlast another couple of presidents. The same is true for Saddam -- we keep applying sanctions and bombing stuff, but in the end he's still there, still in power, and there are no signs of him going anywhere anytime soon.

Well I might as well throw out my opinion. Unfortunately I do not see any really good options at this point. We can't really take care of Saddam once and for all for several reasons. If we went in there and unilaterally kicked his butt out of power, look at all of the political and economic ramifications. The Arab world would hate us(more than they do now) and would probably cut off our oil resulting in economic collapse. Look at the 1970's oil crisis. Most of you weren't around then, but take my word for it, it was ugly! Another problem is the power vacuum we would create in the region. Iran would probably invade Iraq and subjugate the country. Hmmmm, that doesn't sound any good either. How about we take over the country!! Naww, I don't even need to get into that one. Unfortunately, the coalition is gone at this point and with many countries that voted against Iraq wanting to lift sanctions, I think we just need to move on. Sanctions for 30 years haven't worked against Cuba; you think someone would have learned from that. I think we should have negotiated the removal of Saddam as part of the original bargain to assist Kuwait in the first place. At this point, I would leave the other countres in the region to their own defense, and if Saddam gets greedy again, let them figure it out. They come begging for our assistance again, it should cost them. Maybe $8 a barrel for oil or something...

Assassinate Saddum and be done with it, eh? Sounds simple enough. It isn't. As the expression goes "he's dug in there tighter than an Alabama tick". We gave it a go during the Gulf War but the coward hid in the civilian zones where he knew we wouldn't go.

The iraqi people can't oust him -- they're poor, have no organization and no weapons. The iraqi military is equally stimied -- the way Saddum has it setup, they all spy on each other and he'd instantly be alerted to any insurrections.

That gives us the current policy: slap his hand when he clenches his fist, wait him out and hope for the best in the future. To simply leave the region might help in iraqi people but would send a message that the Global Authority will eventually back down over time. Can't have petty thugs and dictators get any validation. Not good for bidnuss.

Leave Iraq alone?! thats nuts...I think that if you leave them alone, you're just asking for it down the road...deal with the situation now.

>I surprised air raid sirens went off before the explosions. I guess they
>weren't using the F117. In the Gulf War, sirens would go off right after
>the explosions because the Iraqis had no idea the planes were coming.

Folks learned how to track the F117 by using a WWII radar that operated in
a different frequency band than where in the radio spectrum that the F117
was designed to be stealthy. Thus it is not too hard to shoot down now.
