i know, lets leave Iraq alone, and let them fly wherever they want, just to please those who dont think this was necessary.

Beast - I know, I was just making fun of CNN

I'm sure that they sent in aircrafts that could defend themselves if they did get in a dog fight. They're not going to send in B2's or F117s all by themselves.

F15E Strike Eagle (it can carry bombs allright, they went after Scud missles among other things)
F16 Falcon (deployed sometimes as close ground support - it sure as hell can carry bombs)
F/A18 Hornet (can definately carry bombs)

all these aircraft can perform strike missions and are designed to do so, and they do so very well, they can also boogy too, and that is another one of their roles.

in today's air force we are trying to make the most out of a single airframe in order to save costs.

traditional bombers are larger and are more vulnerable to both fighters, AAA (flak), and ground to air missle fire. so you send in something smaller, quicker and more manouverable which can do the same job.

Iraqi air defenses were increasing and brought an increased threat to US/British aircraft

So that's what brought on the strike

Pentagon calls it self defense

Update: 24 strike aircrafts used total

I wonder if before they bombed, someone in the Pentagon called up Saddam and said, "All your base are belong to us."

Aircrafts DID NOT cross the 33rd parallel so they were well away from Baghdad

5 Command and Control sites were targeted

Update: OK, My fingers hurt and I'm sure I'm #1 on the Mods hit list now...so I'm gonna stop with all the posts. I just find this really interesting

the US/Brits bombed iraq today because it was stockpiling anti-aircraft weaponry.

<< It just bother's me that a cowardly draft dodger like Bush has the nerve to send our men into harms way when he himself used his daddy's influence to keep out of harm's way during Vietman. >>

So Bush should not be able to conduct any military missions because he didn't serve? That makes a whole lot of sense.

trust me, the military advisors and the top brass at each of the armed services are planning those missions and some of the best pilots / support staff in the world are executing them. I see no reason why Bush needs to have served to decide whether they should strike or not. That's a political decision.

According to the Pentagon, they've been watching these 5 command and control targets for 2 months now and then carefully planned out this mission with that data.

The only incorrect factoid (and it isn't really incorrect, you just didn't mention the USN) is that the F/A 18 is a Navy plane. But I am glad that I didn't have to explain the use of small strike aircraft.
