another cool thing is retargeting ad campaigns.

https://retargeter.com/what-is-retargeting-and-how-does-it-work

Retargeting is a cookie-based technology that uses simple a Javascript code to anonymously ‘follow’ your audience all over the Web.
Here’s how it works: you place a small, unobtrusive piece of code on your website (this code is sometimes referred to as a pixel). The code, or pixel, is unnoticeable to your site visitors and won’t affect your site’s performance. Every time a new visitor comes to your site, the code drops an anonymous browser cookie. Later, when your cookied visitors browse the Web, the cookie will let your retargeting provider know when to serve ads, ensuring that your ads are served to only to people who have previously visited your site.

I ran it against my FB. It came up with a ton of crap that isn't the case. It told me I was a lot closer to people I don't really know (professional contacts) and my girlfriend was someone I didn't talk to. It didn't list much on my salary or my interests. There was a ton of blank spots. Either I'm better at FB than I thought, or this app is a joke.

On the topic of privacy.. FB only uses what it's given. It's not like it's keeping track of your search history, or GPS or emails.

I heard, other day.....GPS in ways is now in play. Soon, Fakebook members will be able to know where all their friends are.

As I said, there is increasing momentum driving this now.....and the sky appears to be the limit, if not outer space.

Let us never let being besotted by technology trump chasing data and being discerning. We are still meant to be behind the wheels of our metaphoric vehicles, not in the passenger's seat, not in the back seat.....not in THE TRUNK.

Whether you are hell bent on trying to impugn the author of the Huffington offering or I, Virgorising, who simply posted a link to it....you reveal the identical level of erudition, class and intelligence.

So I give them access and they can find out information about me? That's really not all that impressive.

Now, give them just my name and have them figure out the rest based on my submitted IP location and what it can work out from what my public profile says... That would be impressive.

is fakebook kind of like how all the "cool" people say m$ for microsoft?

It's what the hipsters use to portray an air of superiority. It demonstrates comparable levels of creativity and wit to the sort of people who call Democrats "Dumbocrats."

LOLOLOLOL

Watch Dogs Digital Shadow will receive the following info: your public profile, friend list, News Feed, relationships, birthday, work history, status updates, education history, groups, hometown, interests, current city, photos, religious and political views, follows and followers, personal description and likes and your friends' status updates and photos.

Well, yeah. If you can't figure out some basics with THAT MUCH permissions. Just lol.

I'm a bit confused now.. are you raging against Facebook, or the eroding privacy by technology?

They are increasingly, inexorably entwined.....so, both.

Technology is in no way at fault; there have been ignoble humans around from the beginning of man. The End justifies the means humans. Determined to exploit anything available to implement their agendas.

It is our mandate to chase data and remain vigilant on behalf of the collective.

Sorry, another generality. Such things are always individual/case specific.

Hilarious! And, I think also comforting.....given, they have a long way to go in the technology to implement their agenda, and so, I would take comfort in what it gets wrong. Mind you, I could not run it cause i do not have a Fakebook account.

Din need one to harvest the big picture re the agenda.

Sorry, the above is akin to (LOGICALLY EXTENDING) celebrating how INCREDIBLY efficient the Nazis were in committing mass murder. German engineering......still very impressive. And, NOT THE POINT.

This isn't the OCEANS movies franchise, guys.....this is real.

Saying that "things are always individual/case specific" is itself a generality.

The phrase "fakebook" is a tired, lazy pun that wasn't creative when it first showed up several years ago in articles that "revealed" the obvious fact that people massage their social media profiles in order to project a specific image of themselves. Its use is not indicative of creativity or wit.

No.

It is our responsibility to manage what data we personally make available on behalf of ourselves. We are not our brothers' keepers.

ZV

I am my brothers' keeper by default, and apolitically.... as is everyone who earns the right to populate my life; we are all in this together, and any civilization without that foundation does not survive long term.

Read history.
