In Chicago last weekend, I linked my Android Pay account to Uber and got the promotion of 50% off(up to $5) for the next 20 rides. Getting Ubers for only $3-8 to get us all around the city was great. Cheaper than a taxi or even taking the subway.

really? what's the rate on the El these days? It is still a flat fee, right, with up to 2x transfers free? While I'm sure the rate has gone up since, it was, at most, $2.10 to get from anywhere to anywhere else in the city using the El + buses (if you had to) when I was living there (last year in 2008, lulz). I can't imagine the fee has gotten more expensive than Uber, unless they changed it to distance-based rate? ...that would suck.

granted, Chicago is very bus-dependent for PT which pretty much sucks, especially if you are trying to get to most places that aren't on the lake.

We had between 4-6 of us traveling around so the subway for everyone together was more than an Uber. We went to the Cubs game Friday night. Instead of waiting a hour to get onto a subway, we walked north a couple of blocks and the four of us took an Uber $8($13 minus the $5 promo) back to our hotel in River North in maybe 30 minutes tops.

$2.25 a ride, $0.25 per transfer of within like half an hour. Bus is $2.50 I think. And, there is like a train within 3 blocks of anywhere important you'd want to go to. I haven't taken a bus in years.

Sure, except for ~60% of the western part of the city. Granted, probably like you, most of my life there revolved around the lakeside area north and south, but even so I often relied on the bus (when I worked at and commuted to U of C from the North Side--can't get to Hyde Park on train only) or because it was more efficient than the redline depending on where you lived (I would take the lakeshore express to get from Lakeview to NU hospital (downtown) on most days) because it was faster/closer.

Wicker Park is a really popular neighborhood (assuming that is still true) and the EL isn't all that convenient for a large part of it. Same with Logan Square, iirc.
