Both setups do work, but having an additional (weak) router and superfluous subnet (LAN-X) is detrimental.

That was true before hardware offloading came to the X. Now the X is usually the better choice, not least because the Lite doesn't include a switch...

To be honest i am not sure getting an ubiquiti router + ap would be a good choice as the router will require an extensive configuration to get it up and running without the gui as it is buggy. You might be better served with their Amplifi product that's more consumer friendly. I have it deployed at some sites without issues.

The ER GUI is buggy? The current version, or some earlier incarnation?

IME (ER-POE5, almost two years ago), the basic routing got up with minimal effort.

GUI has been fine for me. The only problem I had was almost 2 years ago, using the GUI to do firmware...Setup was pretty straightforward using the wizard

Oh really? for some reason i've had issues with dhcp in gui on my er-poe5 where it wouldn't apply changes properly. i've abandoned it since and relied on cli exclusively.

edit: maybe they have changed gui for the better. the last time i used the gui on er-poe5 was 2 years ago.
