Wow, discussion of theft, and an overall tone of disdain for a company trying to protect its property?

Its responses in threads like this that prove that the people bitching about DRM dont really care that the game has a 10 install limit or needs the disc to play, they just want it to be easier to pirate.

DRM = excuse like any other

don't want to pay then don't play

as for thief on this thread, he is obviously a troll.

imagine country where 90% of people have income and pay no taxes, how would that country survive?
imagine car company that gets 90% of its produced cars stolen, how would that company profit or survive?

now how can PC gaming industry survive when 90% will use product but won't pay?

About the same as when people dont pay and dont play.

It doesnt matter either way. You guys keep assuming folks were going to pay in the first place. Thats the whole problem with the piracy argument. You have no idea exactly how many pirated copies are around, and you cant even guess as to how many people would have paid for the game. Theres no way to be sure.
A better would be closer to broadcast televisions shows. Dont make the customer pay. Make sponsors pay, with ads. Can you imagine how many copies would move if games were free?

I'm suprised no one has done it yet.

The ones who never want to pay shouldn't get games for free. Since you can't get car for free, you have to pay it. Same for games, if there was no way to do it illegally and without risk of getting caught, more people would get used to idea of buying them. Not all of them though. Piracy rates of up to 90% are in no way healthy - word of 9 of 10 people you talk with would be "pirate it, don't buy it cuz you don't have to"

Dude, you're living in a "shoulda/supposeda" sorta world. It doesnt exist. I'm trying to live in reality.
DRM does NOT stop piracy. In fact pirates tend to have an easier time playing games because they completely circumvent the problems.
Legit users are the ones who suffer from DRM. And nobody can prove exactly how much money is being lost. Legit users are simply not buying because its pointless to pay money and get screwed in the process. But you dont know how many of them will turn into pirates. There is no way to know.

I am trying to come up with practical solutions. I agree with your hypothetical, IF there were no way to do it illegally, perhaps more folks would get used to the idea of paying. But thats a hypothetical, and again, we have no way to know for sure exactly what it would do to sales.

Yes, because pirates are the ones being negatively affected by DRM..

Statistically, any given DRM complainer is far more likely to be a pirate then a paying customer because statistically, any given PC gamer is far more likely to be a pirate then a paying customer.

And well, if you're in a group where 90% are ducks and you're quacking, ain't got no business complaining when people call you a duck.

If the publishers are smart, they'll entirely drop PC gaming, simple as that. Given the piracy rates, it's just a losing proposition. Not to mention that every game you put out and gets pirated by 90% of PC gamers increases the supply of entertainment, and thus devalues the entertainment that people actually pay for on the consoles.

Hate DRM, claim it doesn't inconvenience pirates and only annoys paying customers if you want. And you'll be right, which is sad because it really was PC gaming's last chance to remain a major player. Now...well, MMOs, console ports 9 months late when the pirates aren't a threat to the real money, and occasional exclusives directed at niche markets or by minor developers without the cash for console licensing.

DRM lost, and so did we.

Read this quote from I song I like very much:

I'm still walking down the street,
When I saw the shadow of a man creep out of sight,
And then he swept up from behind,
Put a gun up to my head,
He made it clear he wasn't looking for a fight,
He said give me all you've got,
I want your money not your life,
If you try to make a move I wont think twice,
I told him you can have my cash,
But first you know I've got to ask,
What made you want to live this kind of life?

He said there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees,
I got bills to pay
I got mouths to feed
Ain't nothing in this world for free.
I know I can't slow down,
I can't hold back
THOUGH YOU KNOW I WISH I COULD

I would love to get caught so I would stop because if we don't get caught we know we can keep doing it without penalty. Now even if I stop the millions of others who steal and pirate like me wont which is sad and may cause an eventual death to PC gaming as we know it. Now is it actually considered stealing since we ask and they let us take them, yes technically its still wrong cause they don't even really know the worth I assume.

---

Yes, it is stealing, and your wish is granted.

why not just stop because you know its wrong; before you get caught?
