Ubuntu 11.04 + 4gb SSD?

I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 on a 4gb SSD in my netbook and it crashes at about 70%-80% of the way through because it runs out of drive space.

How can I prevent it from installing certain things automatically, like LibreOffice, so I will have enough room?

I don't need a swap partition btw, so I already have that set to 128mb since I have 2gb of ram to use. The remaining space for the OS is like 4gb or 3.9gb.

Is 11.04 really that much bigger? I could install 10.04 in 4gb with room to spare. I'm not sure you can do a custom install like you want without building a custom image. The way to go might be installing something like Lubuntu, then adding the Ubuntu packages you want after install.

I'll try to install it again and see if it fits this time. Else I will have to figure out how to make a custom CD I guess?

Like a decade ago I installed Mandrake or whatever it was called and it had a complete listing of everything to check/uncheck for installation. It was so simple. Why would Ubuntu leave that out? Lame!

Edit: Got it installed! It only takes up 2.4gb (including online package updates), so I guess there was some problem detecting my old partition before or something. Weird.

You gotta keep in mind that Ubuntu is sold as a complete package, and is geared heavily towards n00bs, and people who just want things to work out of the box. Too many options at install would take away a lot of it's reason to exist. Ubuntu with granular control is called Debian :^P
