I have major problems with my desktop gpu, a 7870 Tahiti LE on 16.04, and no problems previously on 12.04 or 14.04 :/

Open source radeon driver doesn't seem to support it. The new AMD binaries don't support it. I was planning to upgrade to a 480 anyway, and admittedly the 7870 LE is sort of a niche card, but this has been a bit annoying.

It's nice to see that users of OS's other than Windows still blame the OS for something like bad drivers. On the one hand, Linux can be held a bit more accountable due to repositories, and I did hear Canonical did something weird with respect to ATi drivers. On the other, a driver has nothing to do with the main OS. That beef is with AMD.

Its unclear to me what happened with the ATI drivers. The fglrx driver was dumped from support by...some one...and can't be used with 16.04. This move could make sense if they'd finished the replacement, but they haven't. You're stuck with the radeon driver for a lot of cards because support hasn't trickled down to older (not really old at all) cards. And even if you had one of the newer cards, it seems like things are still pretty unsettled.

I ended up sticking with 14.04 (mint 17.03) from an AMD card based build.

I've been on Xubuntu 16.04 for some time, with Intel drivers. I can't recall many major bugs, and I haven't seen any recently. (Knock on wood!)

I find 16.04 to be noticeably buggier than 14.04 was when I first adopted it. First, I'm getting a bad delay at shutdown which from what I understand is related to systemd. I also have general system stability issues which sometimes end up with a hard crash that requires a physical power button override. I can't exclude drivers as a strong factor in the crashes, but I'm using a Lenovo T420 which worked fine under 14.04. I feel that issues that originate with the included drivers are still considered bugs.

Do you have a GCN based GPU?
