ubuntu linux is sorta buggy and half baked with unity, i dont think the average person will want it on the desktop and esp. not at smartphone speeds

Unity is about the worst Linux UI experience I have has since messy with Linux using KDE and Gnome off and on since 2000

I think they should have went for a phablet. If people are going to run desktop applications on a phone, I would think they would want as big a screen as possible.
I'd want a full keyboard before jumping to a bigger screen. I want to actually write programs on the thing.

And yes, a Silvermont Intel Atom please.

Not made out of gay ass plastic, looks like theres no sd card slot? And it'll have tons of internal storage? Sounds like a winner. Let it have some variant of S-LCD and I'll probably buy it on launch day.

Phones and tablets (and further out: scrolls) are the future, but professionals and power users still need desktops and laptops for at least a decade. You can just get more "horsepower" for content creation like video editing, 3D modeling, or for high-end gaming in a larger chassis than you can in a tablet or phone.
.

Ehh, we're a long way out from performing real-time ray tracing on desktops, let alone phones. Especially if we go beyond 4k resolutions in the future.

I'm waiting for the working version of Ubuntu (mobile), so I can play with it on my Galaxy Nexus

Yeah... I think that I want to see a working prototype first.

Ubuntu has a knack for making bad UI decisions (like Unity), and I don't want to suffer through those kind of headaches on my phone.

Looks like it won't get close to its goal.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ubuntu-edge

It was way too big a goal for such a low (relatively speaking) initial potential customer base. $10 million would have been a better level. I'm actually surprised it got $8 million thus far. Demonstrating that much interest might be a good sign to VCs.
I'm betting it still gets made.

I'd love an Edge, but I don't have $800 to contribute before the product is released. There's a very good chance I buy one when it comes out, though.

cool device, uncool price.

I'd buy one for $300, maybe. I paid $600 for my Note 2, but the Note 2 was special. It actually had specs and features to justify paying a little extra. While the specs look nice, the screen and form are fairly normal, and I bet in a year+ when it's released the impressive specs of the Ubuntu Edge will actually be common among moderate-bargain priced phones.

If nothing else, the device does look nice.

Everything is pretty good now. Pretty good is the new "meh".

Which itself is a sign why the smartphone high end market is saturating. The difference between a 2011 phone and a 2013 high end is huge. The difference in 2 years will also be big, but not the same leap. Now you have fullHD, LTE etc already. You can get faster phones, better ppi, faster internet, but it's like going from DVD to Blu-ray. Sure, it's a leap, but the VHS->DVD leap was a bigger leap.

I'm very intrigued. I want it.

Seems very optimistic but I want in. I don't think they're going to reach their goal of 32 million though. They're at 8 million right now with only 16 days left. Still a very interesting and promising concept.

If the design actually ends up looking like what was rendered by ubuntu it will probably be the sexiest phone on earth

Hope they can deliver.

If you actually look at the hardware and realize that the amount they are asking for is the full unsubsidized price without the same kind of production scale as Samsung or Apple, they really aren't asking for much. I'm betting the profit margin is relatively low for the first initial batch. Show me a current phone that has 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. Sure, that might be the norm next year, but part of any crowdfunded campaign is investment into the future of a company.

The Galaxy S4 has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, and yet costs more than $600 to buy off-contract. And it costs Samsung less than $250 in materials.

I would love to buy the Edge even at that price, but I can't justify it at this moment this far in advance of release.

Today we broke past $10 million in support, and soon the world record for crowd funding will be broken!

The Ubuntu Edge has an unlocked bootrom and we are encouraged to hack/tinker with it.

Yesterday, Mark Shuttleworth posted this message:

A message from Mark Shuttleworth

Hi everyone

Thanks in large part to all of you, the Ubuntu Edge campaign response has been incredible. In just over three weeks more than 20,000 people have backed the project, from individuals giving a single dollar right up to Bloomberg’s fantastic $80,000 contribution. Along the way we’ve broken crowdfunding records, including the fastest project to hit $2 million (7hrs 59mins), and the highest ever 24-hour total ($3.45 million). We’re now on the verge of an even bigger milestone as we approach the all-time crowdfunding record of $10.27 million.

Speaking both personally and for the team, the more time we spend on this project, the more excited we get about the possibilities of this new class of device. And as the news has spread we’ve seen industry thought leaders coming round to the idea that convergence can be a real force, and that this project represents a new way to underwrite innovation.

That led to some significant engagements with suppliers that enabled us to drop the price below $700, without compromising the specification. And now that we’ve seen next-generation phones from other major names, we think the price-performance of the Edge is off the charts -- it offers real value. We’re even more convinced that it will take a new approach to unlock the next wave of mobile innovation.

Whatever happens in the next nine days, the Ubuntu Edge is already making a difference. This campaign lets enthusiast consumers signal their interest to a mobile industry that caters overwhelmingly to the mainstream. It’s making it clear that we’re no longer satisfied with minor updates; we’re looking for true innovation and we’re ready to pay for it. And that message is getting through.

So in a sense, we can be proud of what’s been achieved already -- but we really want to hit that $32 million! We’re going to need a huge push, a surge in awareness that builds momentum to carry us over the line. No one here is giving up while the goal remains achievable, and you’ve all gone out of your way to add your voice to the chorus. So I’m writing to ask you to take to the Twitterverse and other social networks to encourage like-minded types to join you, and me, and companies large and small, in backing the Ubuntu Edge.

As they say, the future is already here, it’s just not widely distributed. We’re working to put it in the hands of 40,000 people, to start a revolution. And you’re there at the start.

Mark Shuttleworth

I think anyone who wants this phone should pledge as soon as possible, and at the very least help spread the word. There are still a lot of people who do not know about the phone.

Besides, if it can run Ubuntu, it should run any Linux.
