You really typically don't want to be logging in as root, the initial password you created will essentially allow you to do whatever you need. Ubuntu for the most parts uses sudo to do any sort of administrative task. Essentially just prefix the command with "sudo " and then it'll ask you for that initial password. As for creating a new user, go to system > administration > users and groups and then create a new user with profile set to "Desktop User" to limit their access. As for installing a virus scanner and firewall, see the Ubuntu Guide. They have instructions on how to install both a firewall and a virus scanner as well as many other useful things. The pretty effects you saw were probably from Compiz Fusion. I believe there are instructions on how to install that in the Ubuntu Guide as well; however, I have my own method of installation that I'd be more than willing to share with you in another reply if necessary. Hopefully the above should be enough to get you going. In addition, you can try the Ubuntu Forums or the irc channel #ubuntu on the freenode server which I commonly frequent. Let me know if theres anything else or if you need any further explanation.

hey thanks alot man ... i have found that guide and have been reading. I also followed another guide to install looking glass and it didnt install correctly and now i cannot install anything else because of that install.

I am going to work on fixing that but most importantly right now is how to install their printers. I went to system>administration>printing
but i do not have the ppd file and have no clue where to find it. Please help with this they need their printers

You probably don't want to start that thread...

Indeed, do not go there... this thread will turn into a Linux versus everything thread with only the things above that statement referring to the original point.

Overall, I find ubuntu to be very user friendly, installed it on both of my parents computers as a thin client to mine and they've both agreed its easier to figure out than windows was. Anyways, as for your problem, I've never done anything with looking glass, but if you could provide more information as to what's happening, I'd be more than willing to browse around and see what I can figure out. Is there any reason you chose that over compiz? As for your printer, I noticed it is in the list of ubuntu printers and has a driver available for it already in ubuntu so I'm not sure what's going on there. Once again, could you provide a little more information such as how its connected, if it's working at all and you're just missing some features or what. Back to looking glass, what exactly do you mean you can't install any other programs? It sounds like you may just have a broken dependency as I have never really heard of the whole installation process becoming broken but I'm sure its possible. Anyways, perhaps I can be of more assistance upon finding out a tad bit more detail about what exactly isn't working. Ooh, btw, could you post a link to the looking glass guide you used so I may have something to use as reference.
