Ubuntu won't boot

I had rebooted to try to boot from a CD so I could install 64bit, but it skipped my USB CD-Rom and went straight to the hard drive. Then I got this problem, and it's recurring (cleared CMOS, flashed BIOS).

Here is a shot of it.

Any ideas?

I don't see what the problem is in the pic. Did it simply lose the Splash screen during boot?

As for the USB CDROM issue, sometimes you need to enable them to boot from the BIOS. Other times it appears as an option during bootup. You'll need to check your computer/motherboard documentation as to which way to enable it.

I have the splash screen off by default, and usually it'll run through all that without any issues. However, now, it's just stopping there.

In that case you could have a failed flash (if so you're lucky to be able to boot even to that point) or faulty update. Flash back to the older BIOS and see if it boots, then look for another BIOS update.

BTW, why did you update the BIOS?

I updated the BIOS because I was told that it would fix the double-boot issue (which, interestingly enough, it did not). I flashed the BIOS after this problem, so I don't think that's the issue (I wish it were that simple).

However, I'm running a hard drive with Windows on the same machine, and it's working properly. I was planning on re-installing Ubuntu anyways, but with the problem of my CD-rom not working, I'm dead in the water.

Perhaps I can pull the drive out of another computer and give it a shot.

Well what happens right after that is printed is SMP cleanup and the first step is updating a setting in the CMOS so it's possible the BIOS update is to blame, but without patching in kgdb or some printks to find out exactly where it's stopping it's hard to say.

This was occurring before and after the BIOS update.

I just don't understand. I pulled an old CD-Rom drive and booted up the LiveCD. I selected start/install, and it printed two lines, the second was something about loading table...then stopped. Nothing.

This is probably impossible, but could I install ANY linux OS through windows onto a separate hard drive?

I guess the problem/s you are having aren't quite clear.

From your first post it sounds as if:
1) you have 32-bit Ubuntu installed and are trying to install 64-bit Ubuntu as well to dual-boot (Ubuntu/Ubuntu)
2) booting from hard drive causes problems

From your third post it sounds as if:
1) you have Windows installed and are trying to install Ubuntu on a second hard drive to dual-boot (Windows/Ubuntu)
2) booting from CD causes problems

I think part 2 is what is causing the confusion. If you are having problems only with the CD then you may simply have a bad CD. Have you checked the CD for errors (boot menu option)? Does the CD work on any other computer?

could I install ANY linux OS through windows onto a separate hard drive?

Not through Windows per se, but you can install from a FAT32 drive (and even do a network/internet install). That method is a little more involved though, and it would be easiest to install from a proper CD/DVD.
