UCLA Orientation Advice and AP Question

Hi all. I'll be attending UCLA in the 2002 fall quarter as a freshmen and summer orientation is coming up soon. Right now I plan to major in Business/Econ but am currently undeclared. I was wondering which placement exams I should take at orientation (spanish, math, and chemistry). Right now I am only signed up for Spanish because I did not take the AP exam and don't plan on doing too well because I did not take spanish my senior year in high school... Do I need to take the chemistry and math one if I passed both the Chem AP and the Calc AB AP? Also, I have not sent in any of my AP exams yet from my sophomore and junior years (Bio in soph and chem in junior) but have sent my senior year AP exams directly to UCLA (gov, calc ab, and eng) by choosing the option. Do I still need to send in separate transcripts for Bio and Chem if they were taken from two previous years or will my senior AP transcript already include those scores for me? Any clarification would be helpful. Also, anything I should prepare for or expect at orientation? Thanks

Well I am passed both the calc AB test and chem AP test and ended up taking both of them, though I don't believe you need to. Something I do know is that your AP transcript is cumulitive, so anything from earlier years will be on it. Ask your OC (Orientation Councilor) about it when you get there. They had to go though a lot of training to get the position, and know the exact rules for everything including what tests you should take.

What to prepare for... Well be ready to meet a lot of people. The people you see at orientation you see a lot after you get out, at least in my experience, These will be the people in your classes and such, and I am actually still good friends with people I met at orientation.

Have fun

IME (In My Experience), just take it easy, get to know the campus, and try to have fun. I didn't meet anyone at orientation that I didn't already know from high school (I go to the UW, in Seattle)... but I did have a good time just getting to know the campus.

Enjoy it.

If you plan on taking chemistry courses, you will need to take a placement test. If you are doing econ, then you will definitely need to take the math placement, and spanish is a good idea if you think you can pass out of your GE language requirement, or if you plan on taking spanish courses during your first year.

Other advice: go to an early orientation session. That will allow you to have more options in terms of classes. By the last few orientation sessions (I went to the second to last) a lot of the courses will have been filled up.

Orientation is pretty good. You meet people and they take you on some treasure hunt at night. They also group you by your major, so you should have picked sociology or something so that you'd be with the good looking women. I was in the life sciences group and we had ummm... female premeds. Nuff said.

I don't know about your AP scores. You can call UCLA and ask them. They'll probably be willing to help.

since you're biz econ, you don't need to take the chem placement exam. I think you need math, but I'm not sure what will happen if you don't take it or fail. Have fun at orientation. I had a good time. I met a really pretty girl there

by god make sure you take an early orientation or else you will have NO say in classes.

i took an august orientation and ended up with Earth and Space Sciences 1 (Geology) and Philosophy of Ethics... EWW

As for AP's, anything 3 and over gets rid of credit requirements, the more the better

I think, for business, you need a specific math course. I think its stats, not calculus. Be sure to check exactly which type of math you need.

it's not a stats course but rather instead of taking math 31b, i believe it is 31e. i don't know if you have to take 31abe or just 31ae but it's one of the two. ask your orientation counselor... they know everything.

i miss ucla... not just mundane work for 40 hours a week!!!
