So I applied to UCSD around 3 years ago, and besides the rejection letter, have heard nothing from them in 3 years... until I get this letter in the mail telling me that I should call Experian, Trans Union, or Equifax and tell them that I am at risk of credit fraud...

Apparently, several computers on the Business and Financial Services network at the university were broken into, and were used for "illegal file storage".... things that just happened to also be on these computers were my SS number, name, address, blah blah... just about everything somebody would need to order a CC in my name... or several CCs in my name. Good job, UCSD.

anyone else get one of these letters? I just got mine, and it says here that the guy had access to all this stuff as of April 16, 2004.

ugh.

pshaw, i don't wanna be liable for anything. why should i pay 50 bucks because UCSD keeps all the SSNs from everyone it's ever rejected? I guess 50 bucks ain't bad compared to paying cash for some guy i don't know who wanted a boat and a new truck. ugh, i have a headache now.

I got my letter a few months ago, but I'm a student there. Apparently all of the non-students who were on record were just notified recently. Their excuse is that they wanted verify some information or whatever.

I work @ UCSD, and from what I have heard, it is not even sure that the information was looked at. Apparently someone without authorization was using the computer and the computer happened to have a DVD burner which they were using to burn warez software/music/movies that they were downloading onto the computer. Since the computer had a dvd burner, it made the files accessible if they were to be burned off onto a disc. They don't think any information was looked at/taken, it was just taken as a precautionary measure.

About damn time, I'd say. God damnit, something else I gotta worry about.

UCSD uses a student id # as well but the social security number has to be stored somewhere in relation with that student id.

dude...this is stupid.

I go to UCSD, and they just happened to get one of those hidden ftp server worm things. So as a precaution, they sent EVERYONE who's name was on that computer a letter.

They basically caused panic over nothing.

I can't believe the IT people down there let this worm go through. What negligence. Also, the computers are faily old, like yr 2000 era dell optiplexes, and they have win2k installed. All it takes is some zome alarm pro, or even a router (they don't allow routers to be used on campus, retarded rule. They want all computers that connects to be each registered an ip addy). Damn, I work like what, 500 feet from the biulding where the computer got the worm.

Much ado about nothing
