I hope they found what they are looking for. If not, and it's just about money, it's a very sad day!

From the article, it doesn't sound like they found what they were looking for, but rather that it was always a finite project with defined goals that have been met. They had originally set it up with certain "boundaries": 8 proteins, 250M molecules, then expanded to 3.5B molecules against 12 proteins.

It didn't say that they actually found what they are looking for, or even if any of the iterations have the potential for use in curing cancer. Just that they had processed as much data as they had planned on. Hopefully the processing has identified potential combinations, but it may take the scientists a long time to check them out.

If it really is being shut down due to lack of funding, that would suck.

I see in the article where UD switched from the Cancer project to Anthrax project supposedly after notifying everyone. Did anyone here doing UD get notified of the switch?

I've been reading the UD message boards. There is no word from UD on this yet. Even if the cancer project comes to an end, United Devices has several other projects that can be run.

WOW Can only wish they had found a cure to ease the suffering of so many. But maybe they did find something beneficial. Would love to know.

I wish Intel would provide suffiecient funding to continue the research!! Just watch them pour half the company's money into Cancer research if the CEO gets it...

Did anyone here doing UD get notified of the switch?

Uh no... but there's a messy issue that came up in discussions that I participated in last year - whether here, at Ars, or on UD's forums - and that was the fact that there were at least 2 different clients made available for running the project. The client downloaded from Intel was configured to ONLY run the Cancer Project whereas the one downloaded from UD would run the gamut of projects. Unfortunately, this info was not clearly communicated to the masses...

Thus, those who thought that what they had would be dedicated to Cancer Research, found that their client thought otherwise. And in the early days last year, there was no ability to "opt out". And when the opt-out option was put in place, then you had the potential to unknowingly rotate processor time within categories, although opted out of say the commercial projects.

The last I heard, you can now opt-out within the category.

Even though I have been running the project on one machine for almost a year and have contributed 380 results (237 days -I temporarily shut it down to get some extra SETI results in during this network crunch... ), I have and will continue to complain about the way this thing was promoted, the encouragement by the UD staff, Intel, and even project participants, to play on the emotions of those who have experienced Cancer first hand (and for those participants who did so, shame on you for not seeing the forest for the trees. ), the lack of Oxford participation in the large Team DC forums, and other things.

If you read that Inquirer article carefully, you'll see mention that Oxford is shocked that UD/Intel suddenly considers the project complete. Yet is Leukemia "cured" as the whole marketing hype promoted? I think not.

Ho hum.

I hate to say that Oxford was too lacsidaiscal (at least in the U.S.) about the whole thing from day one and shouldn't be surprised that they're being shunted aside for something more monetarily meaty.

I hope this isn't related to Dnet's big annoucement in a couple of weeks.

Please excuse me for being a tad off topic, but what big announcement by Dnet in a couple of weeks? I haven't heard anything about an announcement. But then again I haven't been spending at much time in the DC forum as I would like to...

We don't know what the big annoucement will be. All we do know is that the Dnet guys have mentioned in IRC that there will be a big Dnet annoucement, and that our clients have been checking project states more often now.

Hmm... I'm not participating in UD right now. I've been with SETI@Home for years but I tried UD a while back but at the time the client sucked and Emails to UD's support staff went unanswered so I quit the project totally. I've been 100% SETI@Home so I don't know what to make of this...

It sounds like the project is closing down because it doesn't have funds and has exceeded it's initial goal. I know that has to suck for the UD participants but if what they say is true I don't see a problem here. I'm not saying that as a biased S@H person either. At some point the S@H project will end. From what I understand, because of unexpected participation, it's already gone beyond the initial plan. Still, it's on a small budget (donations) and is having problems with bandwidth again. The last time this happened Berkeley released (and mandated) a client that slowed down processing time by ~33% in an effort to reduce bandwidth (and allegedly analyze more data). Who knows... Berkeley could announce SETI@Home "complete" for the same reasons.

What I'm saying is this isn't anything new to Distributed Computing. Everything revolves around $$$ and if someone is losing $$$ on a project they're going to either cut the resources or get companies to help fund the project (even if it results in straying from the initial goal).

Ahh, I'm rambing...

Hey Robor, UD is great now. Only minor problems with the client. As a side note, UD isn't stopping, just the cancer research. That's the cool thing about UD, it's a modular platform so any type of research can be done with it.

After reading this thread I'm not so sure they are stopping the cancer research. I know it's scheduled to end this stage of it the project sometime this year, but they may still do more later (I think they want to analyze the data gathered and refine the process some). Anyways see the above link for the official UD thread and why the author of the article may have a anti UD bias.
