To hell with politics.

CENTREVILLE, Va. - Some people in Centreville are talking about a bright blue light spotted moving in the sky Wednesday night. But no one seems to have an explanation for this unidentified flying object.

It was in the night sky just above Lee Highway when shoppers looked up and saw something weird in Centreville and it was all of it caught on camera.

“All of a sudden, it would stop and go back like this,” said Bryan Fains, using his finger to point out the direction of the blue light in the sky. “At one point, it stopped and went up and up.

Fains quickly grabbed his phone, turned on the camera and recorded the erratic blue light in the night sky. It flew around for about 10 minutes.

“[There] was no sound. It was a distinct blue light. It never flashed or blinked or nothing. It was just blue,” said Fains. “It’s weird. You only see this type of stuff in movies. Just as long as we're here, I'm sure there are other things somewhere.

Fains has not seen it since. Only just the occasional airplane from Dulles Airport. He is all too familiar with those flying objects and their loud sounds. Fains says this one had no sound. The apparent UFO sighting has him baffled.

Pretty neat. No explanations yet.

I swear one day I'm going to get a nice RC helicopter, strap a blue light to the bottom and see if I can make the news. Don't get me wrong aliens visiting and all would be cool but applying occam's razor...

Baloons are a lot cheaper and easier to 'fly'

Sort of related but on the news last night they reported that numerous people had called 911 in eastern NC in cities covering about a 50 mile distance apart after hearing several loud booms that shook windows in the homes. There are a lot of military bases in the area but they all said it wasn't them and nobody saw any planes.
Today at noon on the news they still don't know the source.
http://www.starnewsonline.com/artic...ern-N-C-residents-for-second-time-in-24-hours

For the second time in less than 24 hours, Southeastern North Carolina residents were rattled by a mysterious pair of loud booms that shook them awake and rattled their homes.
No one seems to know for sure what is causing the noises. But dispatchers in New Hanover and Brunswick counties said they got multiple telephone calls around 10:30 a.m. Saturday from people wanting to know why their homes were shaking.
Brooke Lasko, 29, a resident of Stoney Creek Plantation off U.S. 17 in Leland, said she was sitting on her couch in the living room about 10 a.m. when she heard the first “really loud boom.” She heard a second, smaller boom several minutes later.
Lasko used to live near Fort Bragg and said Saturday's noises reminded her of the training exercises armed military forces would conduct on the base.
“It was not like an earthquake,” she said. “It was like a bomb shook the ground. It was a big boom then a jolt.”
On the StarNews Facebook page, other readers reported booms and shaking in Monkey Junction, near the University of North Carolina Wilmington and in Carolina Beach.
Saturday's noises marked the second time in less than 24 hours that people reported loud noises and shaking. The first boom was reportedly heard about 2:20 p.m. Friday. Residents said that one also rattled people's homes and caused mild tremors.

Occam's Razor is possibly the most over-used term on this forum. It's unfortunate that so few people understand what it really means.

Those weren't sonic booms. It was just Bean and Broccoli Burrito night at the mess hall...

True but it would be harder to pull off the "sudden turns" that set most UFOs apart. Always wanted an RC helicopter anyway. Balloon would be quieter though, which may/may not be an issue depending on the area.

The boom thing happened at my house one night a few months ago. Heard/felt it 2 or 3 times. Figured it was just some blasting nearby.

Back in the day, 50-70 years ago, dynamite was pretty common. In fact you could purchase it at some stores - especially if you were a farmer. It's the easiest way to remove a tree stump.

My grandfather had some when I was a kid, and I remember him using it to brake up some very large rocks in the corn field in Howell, Michigan, that he'd hit with the tractor and couldn't move. It was in the news the next day.

There's usually a pretty damn common explanation for this stuff.

Until they come down and hover over our cities ala Independence Day or Signs, I'm not going to spend too mcuh time worrying.

By relying on Wikipedia definition of a philosophical tool, then applying it to a discrete event. This thing is or is not an alien craft. Occam's Razor doesn't really give any insight into whether it is or isn't - it simply offers a heuristic for rejection based on Aristotelian philosophy (i.e. we can arrive at the truth of the matter through pure logic in the absence of scientific observations) rather than the scientific method.

Did I state that it wasn't an alien spaceship? No.

Did I state that it was an RC helicopter with a light? No.

Did I ever use occam's razor as an irrefutable, scientific, or otherwise factual support for any factual argument? No.

I used it appropriately to conclude that the most likely scenario is the simplest one, and listed a fairly simple one off the top of my head.

It'd be nice if a few people from different directions actually recording the angle of elevation at the same time. From that, the altitude could be determined, along with the object's speed. Then, we'd be able to rule out radio controlled helicopter, balloon, etc. with LEDs.

Sadly, like when the aliens visit West Virginia, they stumbled upon dumb people in Virginia as well. I can see not thinking of attempting to record some data if the phenomenon only lasted 1 or 2 minutes. But... 10 minutes? Get some data you idiots.

Oh, and at this point, Occam's razor points to it being a real UFO, simply because the people who sighted it are idiots. And, as everyone knows, UFOs only visit idiots.

Looking closer at the video that looks like a plasma light source. Universities funded by DARPA have been working on plasma as a propulsion source for drones for about 7 years now. Something using it wouldn't make noise you could hear on the ground and would look just like the video.

You used it to arrive at an arbitrary conclusion with no basis in fact. What was the point?

Exactly. It's called everyday conversation, where not every point made has to be it's own thesis. I voiced my opinion and used occam's razor, appropriately, to back it up. I never stated it as fact. But don't worry, if we ever meet up IRL and I tell you the weather is nice, I'll be sure to have polls taken of the local populace's temperature, humidity, and cloud cover preferences to show that my opinion is a reasonable approximation of the local definition of "nice weather" and is therefore valid.

Or you could just take my person opinion for what it is and not quibble over minutia that cannot be proven or disproven by anyone in the room, including you. But if you insist on dong so we can always debate whether God exists or not. That's always a fun one.

I live here in Centreville. We are right on the flight path for Dulles Airport, one of the busiest airports in the country. So yeah, it was probably a plane.
