Ugh, I'm coughing up blood

for the past few days I've been really stressed, and feeling a wee bit sick. It wasnt too terribly bad though. Yesterday, I felt pretty good during school; good enough to be giving girls piggyback rides around the school. But then for practice we had to take a bus up to Salmon Hills to ski there. Thats an hour and a half bus ride. About halfway up there I started feeling pretty bad, but I could still do stuff.
We did relay races around a half mile loop at Salmon Hills. The temperature was about 10 degrees. I went around three times, and the cold air hurt so much in my throat. it felt like I has swallowed steel wool. After the third time, I got into a very painful coughing fit and coughed up some blood. I figured that was a good indication that I should stop. SO I went inside the lodge and laid down on a couch for an hour and a half until everyone was done and came into the lodge too. Some people bought me some hot chocolate, and I drank that but then felt like I was going to puke after that.

On the busride home, I was miserable. I tried to sleep, but the bus kept going over potholes, and the seat was so cramped, every muscle in my body was complaining. When I finally got home, I immediately took a bath. I laid there, immersed in water so hot I could barely stand it, and yes I was shivering and my teeth were chattering so hard it gave me a headache; I think a migraine, because when I went upstairs to go to bed, all the sounds seemed magnified. I actually turned off all my computers so I could go to sleep. This is the first ever my computers have been turned off for more than 10 minutes.

So I took a heating pad into bed with me, as all of my muscles were extremely sore, especially my lower back. I laid in bed, tossing and turning, caught halfway between sleep and being awake. Every part of my body was sore, and every time I turned, the room would spin and I'd feel like I had to puke. I had something like a waking dream; I was half awake, aware of what I was doing, yet I was dreaming. It was quite odd. In my dream I stayed in the bed for three days, and then when I really woke up I was all confused.

So this morning I woke up at like 4 am, then laid in bed until 9:15, trying to muster up enough strength to get out of bed and get dressed. When I went downstairs, I had to brush my teeth because the entire inside of my mouth was coated with phlegm. I coughed a lot more blood too.

I'm not sure what I have; it feels like the flu, but my coach sid I might have pneumonia, which the doctor said could happen when I went to get my x-rays to see about my sternum. SO I dont know if I should go to the doctor or not.

SO anyway I feel like crap. I think theres a good chance I'll have to stay home from school tomorrow as well.

Well I have no idea what is wrong, but I hope you feel better. And as far as I'm aware coughing up blood has never been good.

Coughing up blood???

I'd at least call the Dr. Office, describe what's going on, and get their opinion as to wether you should come in or not.

Are you in high school, living at home with your parents? If so, what the hell are they doing while you're coughing up blood? Having to stay home from school is the least of your worries. Hopefully, you haven't had an ulcer rip a hole in some vital organ. You apparently didn't see the episode of Trauma where a woman who'd been coughing up blood for a while suddenly started hemorrhaging and had blood pouring out of her mouth and nose.

No question about it, get to a doctor NOW. Ravanux is right, there's never a time coughing up blood is a good thing. At the least, you might have pneumonia, but it really could be something worse.

yes I'm in High School. My mother is at work; shes a teacher. If I start feeling any worse I'll call her up and see if she can bring me to a doctor.

oh yeah, and if I make any quick movements, the room starts spinning. I'm willing to bet thats even more reason to go to a doctor. I think I'll just wait until my mother comes home and have her take me to Urgent Care or something.

Get to the doctor. Coughing up blood is nothing to mess with. Don't put it off. If it's minor, then all you suffer is a bit of embarrassment. If it is major, the sooner they deal with it the better.

<< Symptoms: The most prominent symptom of mycoplasma pneumonia is a cough that tends to come in violent attacks, but produces only sparse whitish mucus. Chills and fever are early symptoms, and some patients experience nausea or vomiting. Patients may experience profound weakness which lasts for a long time. >>

<< Symptoms: The onset of bacterial pneumonia can vary from gradual to sudden. In the most severe cases, the patient may experience shaking chills, chattering teeth, severe chest pain, and a cough that produces rust-colored or greenish mucus.

A person's temperature may rise as high as 105 degrees F. The patient sweats profusely, and breathing and pulse rate increase rapidly. Lips and nailbeds may have a bluish color due to lack of oxygen in the blood. A patient's mental state may be confused or delirious.

I've been doing research on pneumonia and I think theres a good chance thats what I have. I just called my mother and shes gonna take me to the doctor soon.

I dont know if any of you remember, but in late December, I hurt my chest and thought I might have broken my sternum. Apparently it wasnt broken, just bruised, but the doctor said that since it hurt to breathe, and I was breathing very shallow, there was a chance I could get pneumonia. And I have a lot of the symptoms: shallow breathing, coughing fits, dizziness. I certainly hope not though.

Doctor, now.

Room spinning is probably due to a fever. Feeling delerious? pnuemonia is nothing to mess with, it can make you very sick and cause permanent damage if not treated.

Sounds like a really bad flu...when your body aches that means flu and not pneumonia. I had a slight case of pneumonia back in November and December and did not have any body aches other than my chest, throat and sinuses.

You still need to go in to see the doc so he can give you an antibiotic prescription. In the mean time, dress warmly (sweatsuits) drink something warm..like hot chocolate and maybe have some chicken noodle.

How much blood did you cough up and are you still coughing it up?

I coughed up about a tablespoon or so. Its gone away now; now I'm just coughing up thin white mucus.

I tried eating some chicken noodle soup but it tasted disgusting. I'm drinking water now, waiting for my mother to arrive. I actually feel a lot better now, but still not good. I'm not dizzy anymore.

What is wrong with people today? No common sence anymore or what. I swear before long I'll see people on this board asking " I'm 9 months pregnant and in labor...what should I do??" Crap people...what would you guys do without the computer to tell you what to do.

I dont have pneumonia; only a virus. The doc thinks the blood was just from my throat being so raw and irritated, not from my lungs.

That's good to hear.

Sometimes pneumonia will develop after your body has been weakend by a long cold or viral infection so i'll give you the best advice my (doctor) mom ever gave me.

PLENTY OF REST/FLUIDs. The rest part is important, better to be sick for three days and stay in bed then drag a virus/flu along for two weeks and risk further infection (pneumonia, bronchitis)

Best thing to do is have some ibuprophen on hand. When you start feeling like crappy and get dizzy, take some. Most of those symptoms are caused by fever. While low fevers are good, high ones are really bad and you need to break them. Take ibuprophen and keep a wet washcloth on your head. Also, don't cover up with blankets. It just makes things worse.
