I heard a crackle when I pushed the space bar. Found pieces of Nabisco Wheat Things underneath... I should really clean this thing out.

You have crap stuck in your keyboard? What on earth have you been doing with it?

BTW-Your username is strangely appropriate.

Step 1: Flip upside down.
Step 2: Shake violently/beat on desk.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!

It's not that difficult to open them up and wash them out.

I can't imagine any electronic thing goes well with hot water and soap... but I could be wrong.

If you've ever opened up a keyboard you'd realize that it's not really complex enough for it to be an issue. The trick is to let it dry COMPLETELY before using it. If you're worried about the electronic portion, it usually only takes undoing a dozen screws before you completely seperate this piece.

I've had my keyboard for years and there isn't crap stuck in between the keys. You may want to stop eating in front of your computer.

I clean my IBM Model M's in the dishwasher. It works great, but those things are built like tanks. I probably wouldn't clean a newer one that way.

(Where's the obligatory board chow comic? You guys are slipping!)

You can pop each key with a flat head screwdriver. Each key is a like a cover for a button.

Inside my keyboard is lots of hair and dandruff.

We have about 5 PC tower boxes filled with keyboards at work. By my estimates, we have about 150-200 spare keyboards. We'll probably replace another 100-150PCs at my location this year, and we usually do NOT replace the keyboard when we roll out the new equipment, so that number will grow.

In other words, I can quickly replace my keyboard when they get really bad, too.

After reading this article:

link

I'm tempted to buy one of these waterproof keyboards:

Seal Shield Waterproof Keyboards

The only downside I can see is that these keyboards are your basic no-frills keyboards, and don't have the extra 50 function/shortcut keys that seem to come standard on many new keyboards now days.

I have had a live fly inside my keyboard before... I was hitting the keys and hearing this buzzing sound and was like, "WTF? Are my speakers borked?!"

Nope... live fly... I had to remove a few keys to get it out and kill it.

Good point. I took my generic Dell keyboard apart last night and realized that all of the keys are attached to a plastic tray that comprises the top-outer half of the keyboard and is completely separate from the circuit board. Since all of the gunk accumulates in the tray with the keys, I can simply put the top portion of the keyboard in the dishwasher and not have to worry about any damage, provided I let the tray completely dry before screwing it back on the rest of the keyboard.

Are all keyboards built like this?
