got a new (old) DL360 a while back... thing is going to drive me insane very shortly

maybe i'll try and stick it in the closet or something. or find some less screamerish fans? should be safe as it's in a normal temp house, not a farm or something..

DL360's are loooooud. I couldn't imagine having one in a home environment unless it were stashed in the basement. putting it in a closet probably won't result in much improvement.

I'm having a drink and cranking some queen to try and drown it out, but it's not working!

Seriously though Colt45, perhaps if this thread was in cases and cooling, someone there could suggest a way to quiet your server... just a thought.

OP there should be an option in the bios to run the fans at half speed. It should help a little (if you haven't already done this).

Nothing in the BIOS, and I installed the service that is supposed to take the fans out of the default hyperdrive. (it doesn't).

fair enough, this is more of a bitching thread than an actual looking for help thread, though

don't know if you actually can... the fans connect into sockets on the server. you can take a couple out, but if enough are missing, it won't boot regardless of any actual temperatures.

I actually enjoy the hum of servers and loud fans. In fact, my mom use to get me to sleep when I was a baby by vacuuming my room and then leaving the vacuum running at the foot of my door if I still wasn't sleeping.

We have several 1U servers, among other switches and networking equipment, that is housed in a full-size rack in a bedroom.

i dunno why, but my whole server room full of 50 DL360 and 380's dont seem so bad. I can stay in there for hours. But just one humming away in a quiet room is horrible to me.

A blankie or a night light doesn't do you any good when you're all hyped up or can't fall asleep! It's the constant sound that just puts me out. Perhaps it just drowns out all the thoughts that cloud my busy mind!

I guess I'm just going to wire in a regulator for now, if it gets too hot with the fan at a bearable volume, I'll have to figure something else out.

I don't mind big droney fans, but hyperspeed 20W squirrelcages and 40mm screamers get to me...

My two main servers are downstairs, but to add the new server I had to relocate the backup server in my room. It only turns on to do backup then shuts off, but some of the removable backup drives have VERY loud fans so when it turns on it drives me nuts. I have to move the backup job to be later at night since 3:30am does not cut it, sometimes I'm even still up.

haha yep if you turn on a server and it makes no noise, you have a problem, and it will be followed by a TSssssssssss and possible smoke.

Colt45, do the BIOS upgrade to make sure you have the newest BIOS. I think the speed control was in later versions.

Just check their environmentals...I believe the DL360 can survive in an Iraq tent.
