I think this post is causing the confusion... Unless they majorly changed BES (granted I'm not sure what release I'm on, although I have all the updates..) an activation password is required with a 'default' setup.

No.. now I see the confusion. It's a syntax error. What I was saying is it's not 2005 and people aren't all using Blackberries anymore - most new phones are now Android/iPhone - thus BES and it's activations are being phased out.

We got away from BES to Windows Mobile due to BES having per unit fees/licensing requirements.

Our windows mobile just sync up with exchange which we already pay for per seat.

Try working in IT before you rag on people who do. If I had a dime for every employee I had to deal with who "knew more than IT," I'd be a wealthy man. The ones who think they know more than IT are the ones who are the most dangerous.

It isn't IT's job to support every employee's toy. If you have an Android phone and they said it is "impossible" to get it working, that translates to "It isn't our standard and we aren't supporting it." And I agree with that 100%. We have users here who have iPhones and they want them connected to Exchange. Sure, I could have easily done it and actually did do it when we tested iPhones for use here, but that isn't the point. The point is that it isn't our standard and we are not supporting non-standard devices.

This x100... I have had many employees come to me asking to set up their Palm or iPhone with our email. I simply say it is not supported.

Not that it can't be done, but it is not our standard. You must have standards accross the board or you will never be able to keep everything straight.

I am not in the "help desk" position, I work directly with the 140 users in my office as the lone IT admin. I know who has the "skills" I can trust and who does not.

I hope we're getting Win7/IE9/2010 soon. And just new computers. I almost wish I didn't have a nice computer at home because it makes me want to stab myself at work. But it looks like they're too busy rolling out new versions of Lotus Notes (holy crap worst software ever) and SAP.

Hm... WinXP (just upgraded to SP3 a few weeks ago), IE7, Office 2000, Lotus Notes 7. I work in a company you could call part of the essential financial backbone of America

Think that's bad? We deal with some government organizations at work that are still using WordPerfect Office 2000 and 2002.

I have no doubt. I just remember that while Office 2000 was a big improvement over 97, it still had memory leak issues and large spreadsheets with macros, etc. killed it. I was so happy when we got off of it.

The last place I worked (I left in 2007) still had a few 386, 486, and Pentium machines on the shop floors running critical processes. A couple of them, IIRC, ran Windows 3.1.

Here, we probably would roll stuff out the day it is released if not for the high degree of integration that Windows and Office have with our phone system and email archiving system.

When we upgraded office 2007 for over 7k machines it actually went smoothly, except for the fact it slowed down all the older systems to a crawl.

LOL My internal domain server is still NT4!

In the health care field we move very slowly. Unfortunately many department don't see the need to upgrade their working equipment but want/need to upgrade the computer systems. It's frustrating as all hell!!!

The solution is to work for a better company. Generally a better company will have better IT tech guys, but this is not guarantee.

Yeah, running on NT4 in this day and age is a bit much. You won't even find drivers for it these days, not to mention the potential security holes. I could see being an OS or two behind, but they are behind by 3 or 4 versions. Your IT manager or CIO is doing a poor job selling IT there, it seems.

And heck, even if you had an app that was too expensive to upgrade and absolutely needed NT4, buying new hardware and installing NT on it is a very poor solution. It should be virtualized instead and you would gain many other advantages too.

ok I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable computer person, only reason I didn't go into IT or a related field is I hated dealing with people being idiots with computers, and knew most entry level jobs that would be the primary roll.

Now I can't be the only person like this who works for a company and you know about as much if not more than the first level Help Desk you have to call when there is an issue that you can't fix directly. Today I had to call in because for some reason the server I use to log into work remotely was down or I just wasn't able to connect to it. Told the lady nicely that soemthing is wrong with the server and would you mind checking it out. she cut me off and made me go thru 45min of diagnostic the whole time talking down at me because I kept trying to tell her the problem wasn't on my side. Call ended with the problem unresolved, while they were looking into the issue. Well I called my friend at the HQ he said the server was down for maintance......Seriously 45min and she didn't even check the server.....

how do you guys deal with this it drives me crazy to no end, because of bs like this I by pass IT completly, if I think I can fix it on my own and when I get caught the rat me out to my boss, he doesn't really care all that much, but they try to get me in trouble over it, and i'm just trying to do my job.

List of things IT said were impossible I figured out on my own to do.
-Work email on my Android phone - got it to work fine after 20min of experimenting with server settings
- printing from the work system remotely - one check mark in the connection settings and oh my I can print
- Log in remotely with my evo - ok this one I didn't even ask about I just did it for shits and giggles and showed my boss and he was like show me how to do that (helps him because he is always on the road and its easier than pulling his laptop out for basic stuff)

On the flip side you guys in IT do you really hate people like me?

You are definately qualified to work in IT by getting your phone setup with email.

That said why didnt you just call your buddy first to find out if the server was down instead of the helpdesk? Seems like a no brainer to me. You have a direct link to troubleshoot the problem and didnt take it.

better check your acceptable use policy, getting work email on a non-approved device could be grounds for termination!

this... alot of companies including mine we are told to tell you its impossible becasue they dont want you to do it.

I only hate users who are pricks about stuff. Even if you are needy, if you are pleasant and don't flip out over little things, I don't have a problem with you...I'm here to help you after-all, it's my job.

I actually hate my coworkers more often than the users. So many are incompetent it blows the mind.

People that aren't in IT expect us IT people to know everything. Just because we don't know something doesn't mean that we're stupid or incompetent, it just means that we've probably never run across that problem before. What makes a good "IT person" (I hate to generalize that like that) is having the ability to figure things out quickly and solve problems that you haven't seen before.

Being able to work your Android phone != being able to work in IT
