Uh..... Fried a processor?

I was helping someone down the hall building a computer and they guy is just waiting for his athlon and HS&F. well, he got the processor today and was so excited he plugged it in without using a HS&F. He told me he was "just testing it out." anyway, to make a long story short, he started smelling smoke and shut down the machine after about 20 seconds. the processor looks a little burnt on the underside.

what do you guys think? I have a pentium so i can't test it out for him....

How does the motherboard and socket look?

his mobo works. I tried one of my old durons on his machine and it works fine...

i remember back in the days i use to run a celeron without hs&F for a few minutes before it would lock (it was too old, i was just messing with it). what's up with these AMD's? too much heat?

as far as I recall, both the motherboard and the cpu manuals have it written all over the place DO NOT OPERATE WITHOUT A PROPPER HS/F!!! which part of that didn't your friend understand? AMD beats porche any day it does 0 to 90 in about 3 seconds..

I think you meant 0 to 390 in about 3 seconds

AMD chips get toasty because they have no built in Heat Spreader like the pentium 4 & celeron chips.

Im looking at the retail box for my processor now, and the AXP instruction manual has (In BIG BOLD red text) "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THIS DEVICE WITHOUT THE PROVIDED HEATSINK AND FAN"...

How could you miss it

Well anyway im pretty sure the thing is toast mate.

Good idea, maybe I'll use an old Pentium 90mhz and use it on my key chain for my car once I can drive,

Abandon all hope, it's dead as a door nail. I've had a heatsink pop off due to a lug breaking on the socket and it burnt up in a few seconds. (T-bird 1 ghz)

Perhaps he didn't have a retail CPU? I would have come with a HSF if he had.

Anyway, yeah, I'm pretty sure its fried, any idea what model processor it was?

Having the hestsink on and not plugging it in is bad enough but this is just plain dumb to not even plug it in at all. Yea, this guy need a smack upside the head, what a moron!
