The cheap end starts at about $75-100 for learner instruments. Couple of hundred for a decent banger. I have a '74 Martin D18 that cost me $1800 a few years ago. Might be worth as much as $2500-3000 now.
Hey, where you at? Can I borrow it? :sneaky:

I have a 25 year-old Fender Strat, the cheaper Japanese one with, ironically, really crappy electrics (I've had it since new), but no working amp. I guess if I get really hard-up I can just play that but with no amp, its like mehh...

You can get amps cheap. Alternatively, you could run it through a computer, and output to a receiver, or some decent computer speakers. There's a package for GNU/Linux(can't remember the name) that lets you add effects. If you use a real time kernel, performance should be acceptable.

Not ideal, but it should give you an acceptable sound for practicing.

I've been pretty impressed with the foreign Fenders, especially for the money. You couldn't touch a guitar of the same quality/price back in the 80s. It seemed like companies made unplayable junk for cheap, or something decent starting at $300. There wasn't much in between.

Honestly, I don't even know how good my Mexican Strat is. My amp is just a $100 peavy (piece of crap), haven't even played it in about 5 years. I have a nice Ovation acoustic as well. Hate ovations though because they slip off my lap because they're rounded.

I still like listening to great guitar music though, so I'm not completely dead.

Almost everything about my Japanese Strat is good except the fucking electrics. The pots and switches started getting scratchy/shorty after a few years. It never was exposed to super-high prolonged humidity or anything.

My only other complaint is that when I removed the pick guard, the screws came out with bits/flakes of what looked like wood glue. When I tried to put them back in, nearly all the screws were stripped. Its like maybe someone at the factory drilled oversized pilot holes by mistake or something, so they just put some wood glue in there. Well that's exactly what I had to do, use wood glue in order for the screws to hold/bite.

No shit, this was a great learning experience. Note to self: Even if someone offers, NEVER borrow anything that you cannot afford to replace. And don't borrow anything that has sentimental value, either (I lucked out there, too).

Yup. I especially shy away from anything with a motor. That's just asking for problems. It could break through no fault of your own, but you'd be obligated to pay at least half just because it died in your possession.

Ha. If you're in North Jersey I'll bring it by for a jam session . I actually need to get it over to Foccacio's in Easton, PA. The neck and bridge need resetting. I can't keep the humidity and temp consistent in my office, no matter what I do, and it really messes with my box.

...why would you use gorilla glue?
I talked to someone who practically uses adhesives and bonding agents on a daily basis. He said he prefers Gorilla Glue more than epoxy for wood applications and the strength should be more than enough. Soooo.....

gorilla glue glue holds extremely well and is pretty easy to apply. it also expands and will fill most gaps. not a bad choice
i prob would have used PL but thats just me

gorilla glue = messy, nasty if you don't clean it up while wet, etc. Every joint I have destroyed in testing show it to be a really good glue though. I bet you have a working new guitar

Gorilla Glue is a polyurethane glue, which is very good for wood.
Yes, it expands, foams and it messy... but it is a great bond.
