We have laws limiting hate speech right here in the US. Limiting hate speech is not the same as compelling speech. And the idea that Canada compels speech is false, a common misunderstanding, exacerbated by a supposedly smart guy (Peterson) being really stupid, and unfortunately popular with people desperately seeking the next thing to fuel their outrage.

So if I call someone a girl or a guy in Canada and they don't want to be called it, you're saying I cannot be fined and/or imprisoned? The law is clear.

Do you know what compelled speech is? Can you tell us why it's good or bad?

Do you think that if the teachers were calling the pupils c*nts instead of girls, this would be compelled speech?

The reality is perspective on lots of things in a society shift over time along generations. I don't find trans-inclusive language bad in any way in itself.

What I respond to, and I think you may also be responding to, is the notion that forcing this language difference may feel invalidating to the staff who are forced to use the language. That's, of course, pure projection. The article cites no evidence of such and makes a statement explicitly to the contrary. However, I don't accept it as absolute fact because of this.

Now... Some parents are taking issue with this, at least that's what the article states. I'm not too sympathetic here. Parents aren't required to change their speech, and this is an elite school with competitive admissions. No one is denied a quality education if they choose this isn't for them.

But there is a real principle at play. And this matters very much to me. The principle that I see is that, in effort to validate the experience of a trans student, it necessarily obligates an objector to stuff their own experience. If forced to choose that one party gets invalidated, I'm ok choosing this one. But I don't see that this has to happen. Why is one person necessarily right and not permitted to be challenged and another necessarily wrong and not permitted to openly maintain a difference? I don't like that idea. People can openly carry differences and still respect each other.

I don't believe it works that way, at least on a national level. I fundamentally disagree with anything that would put such a restriction under penalty of law unless the speech was another violation (e.g. harassment, intended to incite violence, etc.). I do not understand national Canadian law to outside those boundaries.

So you're saying you don't understand what compelled speech is? I'm happy to explain. When the government punishes you for saying something, that is not compelled speech. It would only be compelled speech if the government punishes you for NOT saying something they want you to say. Hopefully you are able to understand this concept and you don't spread this misinformation willfully from this point forward.

At first I had to check my calendar to see if it was April's Fools Day, nope. They have Girls in the name of the school but have banned the word girls from language at the school to more inclusive to trans. When does this insanity end and when is it taking it too far?
