I put down the K8N Neo4 Platinum (non SLI) even though I'm still not sure but if I bought today I'd probably try it out. I'm not bothering with SLI for now, at least not nVidia's version of it. I don't care for the limited applicability nor being locked into pairing up GeForce cards.

And what the hell is VIA's problem? I'd like to have some KT890 boards to look at, but what few are coming out, they're all hobbled with the crusty old VT8237 southbridge. Where's this VT8251 they're supposed to be putting out? VIA's out of the running for me until they get these out. Getting impatient.

i went with the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum. (I will it Thursday night when I get home from this trip, and the CPU will arrive Friday)

It is going to replace my KT3 Ultra ARU (XP1700). Yes, I have had it that long. I also have a KT3V which has been solid for me, as well. No reason for me to switch from MSI, yet.

I'd like a board with a passive chipset cooler and 1394 and don't care for SLI.

SATA2 doesn't seem to offer anything with current HDD's, and I already have a wireless router/firewall, so NV chipset doesn't offer anything more than extra heat in the case.

Right now it looks like the Albatron board might be nice since it has a built in Via Envy 24 sound chip.

It'd be nice to get one with the newer Via southbridge, but considering they aren't even ready for the Intel Reference board (based on the AT Via review from earlier today), I doubt we'll be seeing them on a retail AMD board for quite some time.

However, since I'm still waiting for a good PCIe video card in the $300 range, I guess I'll just wait and see what develops on the Mobo side in the next month or so.

EDIT:
I should mention that the Chaintech board is interesting to me, even though it lacks 1394, and the DFI boards are interesting, since they have the supposedly ultra quiet fans. I'll wait to hear what people think on the DFI boards, but they might be worth a look even though they don't have the passive chipset cooler.

about $480 yeah. But that is one long term investment. It is the nicest motherboard I have ever seen. Suited to servers, workstations, AND gamers. Not many motherboards are so diverse.

Consider the motherboard is single most important component in your system. It dictates everything else. PSU, CPU, RAM, and what busses your add in cards can be, the type of hard drives you run. Everything. It has two full x16 slots, and will support mult-core opterons. I'd say that $500 will last a lot longer than the $500 people regularly spend on GPUs

I would vote for the Gigabye K8NXP non-SLI if it actually existed anywhere; no hits on Newegg, Pricegrabber or Dealtime. 1 hit on eBay for a used one going for $175; doesn't their SLI go for about that, depending on where you look?

Very true, but one reason it can be that expensive is because it is meant to be put into server systems, which have longer product life cycles than more consumer/enthusiast boards. Most people on these forums probably upgrade once or more a year, and for them, spending $500 on a board would be absolutely ridiculous. Added to it the fact that the board will have zero overclocking options and most games (the only reason for SLI) do not support multi-processor systems. I would say the majority of people would benefit more from spending the cash on better memory, a better PSU, and faster processors, than a $500.00 motherboard. Now for high-end workstations, where multi-processors are actually taken advantage of, this board would kick a$$ and take names!

Next gen games over the next will take far more advantage than computer games ever had in the past decade. Thank you Intel HyperThreading for helping AMD server platforms kick major gaming ass.

Need I say 'dual core' Come on, game devs aren't stupid. The next unreal engine is going to be highly optimized for SMP. As are a lot of games. Then that board will take even more names.

Is socket 940 too good for you? bah. The Iwill D8KES or Tyan K8WE would toast every board listed afaic. It's 2005 people, most games that need a PCI-E GPU can take at least some advantage of SMP. Maybe not the same as an app designed for smp from the ground up, but I'd wager a dual opteron would out perform a uniprocessor 939 in gaming untill its more than 400mhz faster, and there isn't any FX-57 (barring VapoChill) to give a dual opt250 a run for it's money. The dual opteron will certainly last a lot longer for your cash than the gpu, which have much shorter life cycles.
