I built my first AMD system sind the K6-2 the other night.... all went pretty smooth except I was unable to get device manager to show the actual name of the harddrive or show it as ultraDMA, im sure its a combination of the BIOS setup/via 4in1's, but im not sure where to start.

also I have a maxtor 40gig drive and the motherboard will only recognize it as 32gig!! its a tyan trinity KT motherboard, with the KT133 chipset. I thought for sure that this newer technology board would be able to see the whole drive, unlike the older noname socket7 board I had it running off of before and had to use EZBios(blech!) looked for a bios update and there was only one newerr with no support listed for larger drives. any clues out there in anandtechland?

Thanks,

AMD

More info!!! More info!!! AMD4ME2, what operating system are you using? Did you use VIA patch version 4.28? Is it only getting reconized in the Operating system, or BIOS? If is not correct in Operating System then there is a good possibilty your File Allocation Table is improper -> Fdisk, reformat and start over. You never did mention if you were using the latest BIOS. Check Tyan site and see if new BIOS is available.

well let me tell you the whole story.

its a 40gig Maxtor drive that the bios only sees as 32gig... I was almost positive that if I had a newer board than the old socket 7 one that I would be able to see the whole 40gig, but that did not happen. (I went ahead and used it as a 32 rather than use EZbios)

anyhow its win98se, not the latest tyan bios as there is only 1 newer bios and no changes regarding harddrives or anything. I used 4.25a from the via site... since that was the only one I saw there. and it was newer than the one that came on CD.(tried CD one too)

one interesting point is that device manager shows 4 lines under harddrive controllers:

primary(dual fifo)
secondary(dual fifo)
via busmaster ide controller
standard esdi/ide controller

I can't get rid of the standard one... if I remove it its back when I reboot.

one question is should it actually say "UltraDMA" in device manager to be performing at top speed(ata66)? I have another system I just built and I want it to perform as fast as possible, but it too says dual fifo but doesn't have the extra esdi/ide entry in device manager.
