Check your local store. They still might have a 3 year warranty drive. I scored the last one at the northpoint bestbuy today (Atlanta).
In atlanta they dont have any 3year warranty drives left at the cumberland, town center or north point locations.

FYI: All hard drive manufacturers changed their default warranties from 3 years to 1 year last year but some stores still have old inventory (3 year warranty drives)

I searched but didnt find this deal posted. LMK if it is a repost

also.. anyone know of B&M stores that sell seagate hds? Circuitcity, microcenter and compusa dont.. i dont know where else to look. I'm trying to find a place to PM maybe.

I don't want to come off as thread crapping, but all the benchmarks have shown the Seagates
to be the slowest of all the 7200 RPM drives.
Both the Maxtor and WD are much faster.

they seem to be fine to me

i am running 3x 120 GB Western Digital SE's in on or my machines and an 80GB Cuda IV in another
I doubt i could tell the difference

i bought into all that hype when i got my first 2 but was not all that impressed

i only bought the 3rd one because i got it for $70 after rebate

i know the Cuda IV is probably slower but significantly slower i doubt it

not even slow enough for me to notice the difference IMO

Can you use BVG on an OEM price (Newegg) vs Retail (BB)?

(I have one of these drives and like it very much. It makes about half the noise my Maxtor makes and tests show it generates less heat. Those Fluid bearings = less friction & noise).

They aren't all that noticably slower, but they are almost silent in operation compared to the Maxtor and WD's. They are *very* popular with the silent PC crowd because of this.

Yup, I rather have a hd that doesn't keep me awake at night instead of a hd that loads Unreal II five milliseconds faster.

I got a Maxtor 8mb 80gb 7200rpm in a recent Staples deal and it came with a 3-year warranty.

The Seagate may give up some performance for ultra quiet results but to some who want a quiet PC it may be worth it.
My drive is one of those fluid motor ones and is supposed to be quiet but the fact is it isn't during reads/writes. You can definitely hear it chugging away.

Maxtor switched to a one year warranty on all models manufactured after Sept. 1, 2002 (possibly Oct 1, 2002, I don't recall).

At first the shortened warranties pissed me off. But remember that HD prices have fallen so far, and capacity needs have grown so much that if a drive goes bad, you can probably replace it for something with double the capacity at the same or lesser price than you paid more than a year ago.

I also have several hard drives of substantially varying rated speeds, and I can barely tell the difference between them. My next computer is going to be as quiet as I can make it, and if I have to give up a few milliseconds to do so, so be it.

I've have the baracuda and the Wd SE.

The SE is SIGNIFICANTLY louder, with a high-pitched whine (not nearly as loud as a CPU fan though, but still MUCH louder than the baracuda, which is near silent.

The SE is Noticably faster. Even installing Windows takes noticably less time. It does "feel" a lot faster too.

However, the speed improvement that the SE brings will not make me let go of my precious quiet baracuda.

Just a warning about the Seagate drives -- they get hot. So a specific hard drive cooler is really recommended. Or even just a case fan that blows over the drives. The drive I got has a metal plate on the bottom of the drive. This makes it look kind of cool, but I think you should take the plate off for better cooling. This should not affect the warranty, as you can put it back on if needed. Just save the plate and screws. The screws for this plate are a funky kind that you usually get a tool for in computer toolkits.

That plate is the Seashield which dampens most of the HD sounds. If every drive came with them then most would be just as quiet...me think.

I have had my computer on all day, with the case closed. My cpu and GPU are watercooled with a radiator that is outside my case. The only fan I have in my computer is the PSU fan. In otherwords, I have very very little airflow going through my case (if any). And I just felt the harddrive, and it's not even slightly warm. It's not "cool" like cold metal is, but it doesn't seem warm at all either. I would say it's barely warmer than the metal of my case. NOTE: no harddrive cooler or fan anywhere near it.
