Saw an Ultra 500W PSU at Frys website for 40.00 wth a 40.00 rebate without free shipping, but when I went Checkout and entered my zip there was no shipping and a free shipping sign came up. Link

Shouldnt be too loud, 120mm fan, single +12V rail with 28A, 1 PCIe connector, 70% efficency though... so it loses alot of its power as heat instead of giving it to your components.

For free its a nice backup PSU

Yep, I just got the 400 for free, just sitting there... Do I pile on and get another for reserve?

Nice find! I can definitely find use for a free multiconnectable 500w PS. It uses a 120mm low RPM fan, so I'll bet it's not too loud. I just ordered--the Fry's link now contains the "free shipping" advisory.

D@mnit, man. I wished I'd known about this sooner. I ordered one from Circuit City for $10 after rebate.

70% efficency is considered fairly normal. If your PSU averages 70% efficiency, I wouldn't be compaining.

Thanks, in for another. That makes 2 500W and 2 400W now. First 3 are purring away just feet from me.

Noteable is that the Ultra supplies have a lifetime warranty if you register them online or by mail.

Also suggest you use the Express Rebate at OnRebate. Much quicker although it will cost a little on this unit, either $2.50 or $3.50, probably $3.50, but you will get the rebate much faster and, hey, $3.50 for a new lifetime warranted supply. Sounds good to me.

1) People report it is not very quiet, not as quiet as other PSU with 120mm fan. Other manufacturers that have used similar (same?) fans have found they are not suitable for this use, need to be ball bearing in a horizontal position near hot parts.

2) Construction quality is horrible- far worse than most any generic PSU I've seen in years. Flux residue everywhere, flimsy PCB, thin copper, crooked heatsinks, capacitors/jumpers/wires/etc not even fully inserted into the board and bent over dangerously. Many of the wires in the wiring harness don't even have a spot on the PCB, they are spliced together into only one wire limiting the reliability of the connection and current capability. It's just not designed to be modern, it's retrofitted with this addt'l connectors very poorly. Manufacturing this sloppy is extremely rare, practically unheard of on any brand you recognize.

3) JonnyGuru never does adequate testing (Edit: to support the conclusions some of you are making), leaves them hooked up only a short period of time wholly insufficient to determine if it'll run at rated output for life. PLUS, the units he reviewed in the link use different parts!! They are not directly comparable, at the very least the caps and transformer are different, maybe more but the picture is too low res. to see the rest except same layout.

Edit2: It is not Jonnyguru's fault if you assume things he did not prove in a review, and it does not discount the other useful information and testing he does!)

4) Examination of the parts on the 400W V-series version shows they are rating them for peak, not sustained power. If you bought a Sparkle (for example) rated this way, the 500W version should be rated over 700W.

Now let me be clear about something- even though this is a relatively poor PSU (relative to some of the more popular name-brand 500W units costing far more), it is still a good deal at FAR, but ONLY within this context of very very low price and intermittent higher current demands.

As always, I'm sure some n00b will come along and try to challenge what i've written. Save your fingers from typing and open one up then tell us what you find in very specific details including datasheets. Parts don't lie.

The primary concern is that while most people don't need a 500W PSU, some may actually need a lot of current continuously (like with gaming rigs) and find this unit a problem.

Check the BBB record on the rebate processing company Onrebate.com and also search Google for "Onrebate.com" and "complaints". They've been known to leave issues unresolved and there are plenty of complaints about rebates not being honored.

Be careful. You might lose $40 on something you really don't need, but bought anyways thinking you will get the money back.

I can add a little info. In a former life I was a QA Manager at a high-tech R&D and manufacturing facility. One of my responsibilities was a process rework of the PCB area. Later after I received my EE I was involved in the R&D of switching supplies.

We can't open one up to look, for breaking that tiny little label would void the lifetime warranty. That said I looked inside with my trusty 7-LED flashlight. While it is impossible to get a good view of everything, I don't see any glaring, scary things. Not real excited about the yellow caps, the heatsinks could be bigger, and I hate Silpads, but where I worked we used nothing but the highest quality parts, but our products cost 800-900x what this supply does at retail.

We all understand what you are saying and I might not use this in my main server which runs with 8 HD's, but for my other auxiliary units which contain a processor, 1 HD and a DVD-RW these units simply skate along at probably 5% or less of their rated capacity. They are very quiet and put out almost no heat.

Frankly, I have always been disappointed that there does not appear to be, anywhere I can find anyway, a place that really runs these things through the paces. I've been there, done that, and certainly if you loaded one of these FAR supplies up to put out the rated power, over the long term I believe we all know it would probably overheat and shutdown, or simply go up in smoke.

We understand what you are conveying but at the same time, it's free. Free is good. Free beats paying money if the device functions for our needs. I used to buy only name brand stuff. I found that products I never heard of before like LG and BenQ were actually sometimes better than the Pioneer and Sony stuff I used to pay 3x the price for.

I will say this, as long as they keep pumping these out for free, I'm gonna keep buying. All I could ever lose is the cost for the Express Rebate ($2.50).

Speaking of OnRebate, I used to be scared to death of them because I couldn?t find any feedback from users. Looking at my records, I have now sent them 8 rebates. There have been some issues like their mail server refusing to send tracking numbers, but each time a call took care of the issue straight up.

As I posted elsewhere, I recommend the Express Rebate they offer. There is a cost involved and the times they state they don?t meet, but they are close(within a few days) and having a check in my hand a couple weeks after I send the paperwork in is worth a couple bucks to me, particularly on a FAR deal.

UPDATE: I just filled out the rebate form. The "No Wait" Express Rebate charge on this one is $4.50 (ouch). That is right on my edge of comfort. On the 400W supplies it was $2.50 and on the RS Ultra Cases it was $3.50.

That was just too detailed, reasoned and helpful. It seems appropriate that madeupfacts killed him.

It's around 10% of rebate amount.

Damn, I may go for one of these as a spare and sell off my 400W spare.
