I can add a little info. In a former life I was a QA Manager at a high-tech R&D and manufacturing facility. One of my responsibilities was a process rework of the PCB area. Later after I received my EE I was involved in the R&D of switching supplies.
We can't open one up to look, for breaking that tiny little label would void the lifetime warranty. That said I looked inside with my trusty 7-LED flashlight. While it is impossible to get a good view of everything, I don't see any glaring, scary things. Not real excited about the yellow caps, the heatsinks could be bigger, and I hate Silpads, but where I worked we used nothing but the highest quality parts, but our products cost 800-900x what this supply does at retail.
We all understand what you are saying and I might not use this in my main server which runs with 8 HD's, but for my other auxiliary units which contain a processor, 1 HD and a DVD-RW these units simply skate along at probably 5% or less of their rated capacity. They are very quiet and put out almost no heat.
Frankly, I have always been disappointed that there does not appear to be, anywhere I can find anyway, a place that really runs these things through the paces. I've been there, done that, and certainly if you loaded one of these FAR supplies up to put out the rated power, over the long term I believe we all know it would probably overheat and shutdown, or simply go up in smoke.
We understand what you are conveying but at the same time, it's free. Free is good. Free beats paying money if the device functions for our needs. I used to buy only name brand stuff. I found that products I never heard of before like LG and BenQ were actually sometimes better than the Pioneer and Sony stuff I used to pay 3x the price for.
I will say this, as long as they keep pumping these out for free, I'm gonna keep buying. All I could ever lose is the cost for the Express Rebate ($2.50).
Speaking of OnRebate, I used to be scared to death of them because I couldn?t find any feedback from users. Looking at my records, I have now sent them 8 rebates. There have been some issues like their mail server refusing to send tracking numbers, but each time a call took care of the issue straight up.
As I posted elsewhere, I recommend the Express Rebate they offer. There is a cost involved and the times they state they don?t meet, but they are close(within a few days) and having a check in my hand a couple weeks after I send the paperwork in is worth a couple bucks to me, particularly on a FAR deal.
UPDATE: I just filled out the rebate form. The "No Wait" Express Rebate charge on this one is $4.50 (ouch). That is right on my edge of comfort. On the 400W supplies it was $2.50 and on the RS Ultra Cases it was $3.50.
