Shouldn't be any issues. I've used UltraVNC server on my Win7 as well as Vista machine and have been able to log onto the VNC servers from Vista, Win7, WinXP as well as an iPhone.

I'm inclined to think it's some kind of settings issue. If you're accessing from within the same subnet you should be able to just enter the server's address and port and log on. If you're accessing it from outside of the subnet you might need to have your router forward the appropriate port to the correct address of the server machine. Also make sure you install the Vista drivers even if you're accessing the server from a WinXP machine.

the only way i can get it to work is backwards. I have the server running on both systems and i have the viewer listener running as well. i can't get it to connect with the viewer at all, but if i select add new client from the server options and type in the IP of the PC i want to connetc to, it connects, but the the control is on the PC i want to control and it is controlling the PC i am.

i remembered it was tightvnc that i used at work and i downloaded that. it correctly worked instantly. not sure why real and ultra vnc wouldn't work though.

well it quit working, no idea why. i also found out that you can't register the server as a service in vista.

any other vista compatible remote access software out there thats free or costs under $10?

Why bother with VNC? I spent countless hours dicking around with all the VNC variants... then I discovered Logmein. Good god, it took me 5 minutes to setup and works 100% perfectly every single time. It's free too, btw.

Screw VNC.

The free edition of real VNC does not support Vista and Ultra VNC works properly only with windows7 32 and Vista32 for the moment. Even the latest Ultra VNC ver (1.0.6.4 ? July 2009) has issues with Vista64 and Windows7 64 link. I'm using the latest ver of Ultra VNC on machines running Vista32 without any problems but that's as far as it goes right now.

Lately I've installed the latest ver of Ultra VNC on 2 laptops running Vista 32 business and everything works just fine. One of the laptops is not even in our LAN but Ultra VNC has no problem working through our VPN. It is also possible that you can access a machine running Ultra VNC server from a machine running real VNC viewer but that won't help unless they fix the problem with Ultra VNC's mirror driver.

I have almost no issues with Ultra VNC 1.0.6.4 on 64 bit machines, both Vista and Win7. Again, I am logging into a computer running the 64 bit RTM of Win7 but have used the RC copy of Win7 running the Ultra VNC server as well. I can confirm that the 64 bit Win7 machine can be logged in from an iPhone running Mocha VNC v2.1 and 32 bit Windows XP and 32 bit Vista Ultimate machine running Ultra VNC 1.0.6.4.

There is a usability bug when logging into my Win7 machine. Basically if I have a grouped icon in the Win7 taskbar (for example if I have two instances of Firefox open and grouped) it will not allow me to click and open either one since the menu list that allows you to select then does not show up. As a work-around I open up the task manager and select which instance of the app I need. This issue also shows up on the iPhone and 32 bit Vista Ultimate. It's annoying but consider Ultra VNC is free it's not a huge deal.

I haven't had the chance to attempt to log into the 64 bit RTM Win7 machine from another 64 bit Win7 machine or Vista machine so I can't confirm that you can log into a 64 bit Win7 machine from a 64 bit Win7 (or Vista) machine. I suspect it should have no problems. I have in the past used a 64 bit Vista machine with Ultra VNC server running on it and have been able to log into it.

I haven't used Ultra VNC with any 64 bit OS so far but it's good to know that you have no major problems with win7 64/Vista64. That shows that the 64bit related issues are not "global". However pontifex seems to have hit the 64bit wall. I wonder whether an uninstall with some utility like revo uninstaller could fix things.

I ran into this a year ago or so too. You have to enable and start the Remote Registry service. Once that is going problem fixed.

Remote Registry shouldn't matter. I just logged in real quick to my 64 bit Win7 RTM machine. The Remote Registry is set as manual but the service is not started. I'll try completely disabling it later to double check. However, since it's not started I don't think Remote Registry has anything to do with it.

Normally I disable remote registry because no one not with physical access should be changing my registry settings. Since this is a new install I haven't gotten around to going down and fine tuning my settings.

Teamviewer!

Better than logmein, similar functionality, and free for personal use.

i installed it but didn't like it. from what I could tell, I have to create 2 accounts, 1 for me and 1 for the pc i want to connect to. I didn't see any way to do a direct connect or easy connect.

Ideally, I just wanted something that I could plug the IP address/hostname and go.

RealVNC personal and Enterprise work with Windows Vista just fine (I use RealVNC Enterprise at work), provided you allow the holes in your firewall. The free RealVNC still has issues. Don't install any of them as services, just run it as a user process. You may need to run it as admin also. Another issue is that Aero does not translate well over VNC, unless you undo "Poll Full Screen" which can end up being very bandwidth and CPU intensive if I remember correctly. Really, RDP works wonderfully if you have Business/Pro or above of Vista or Windows 7. If you have problems getting it to run, just try taking a look at some of the posts (or make one and ask with your own specific scenario) over on the official Windows 7 RC Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . Chances are if you give enough information specific to your needs or issues, they can give you a very good answer on how to get it done right.

I use Ultra VNC (server and viewer) on a Vista x64 machine and a Vista x86 laptop without problems. Didn't have to do anything special...

It seems the Aero interface is giving UVNC a fit. I've just done a little experimenting. It seems that under Win7, when you click on the grouped icons in the taskbar, the jumplist do show up but are not visible from the client side. You can't see it from the UVNC client but you can still click on it. Hopefully something they fix later on.
