I have an Ultra Xfinity 600W (SLi) PSU that is brand new but has been unused for a few year sitting in a nice dry air-conditioned cupboard.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...341&CatId=1483
I just assembled a new system

MSI-NF750-G55 http://www.amazon.com/MSI-NVIDIA-nFo.../dp/B002MAPSAS
AMD Phenom II
8GB Partrit RAM
Hitachi 2GB HDD

Anyway when I power on the system only one of the 4 CPU LEDs illuminate - the fans turn etc. etc.

I swapped the PSU out from another system in the house - when I boot the 4 CPU LEDs illuminate and everything works as normal.

Now when I test the Ultra PSU with a multimeter it appears that all of the correct voltages are registering as the 24-pin ATX connector and the 4-pin CPU connector.

Why will it not boot the system, when everything appears to suggest it's working properly?

Cheers in advance

I got one of those FAR a few years ago (OK, so actually $4...I went with the online, immediate rebate where they kept a chunk).

I didn't take it out of it's box...it just went into the parts closet. A year later I built a machine for my sister...the PSU lasted for almost a year before it puked, also took out the mobo. RAM, soundcard and videocard were salvageable, tho'.

Wasn't worth the $4.

I've experienced PSU's that are as dead as a doornail, but I've never encountered a PSU that powers up and the drives activate, fans spin etc but the system wont boot/post.

Even when you put a voltmeter across the terminals the correct voltages are being recorded...?

Put in another PSU and the system fires up perfectly...there's something wrong with the lgic here surely?

I've just ordered another PSU from Newegg so it's not the end of the world but it would be good to understand why this has happened?

So it might be a blessing in disguise then?

SUMMARY:

This PSU definitely offers a lot of power, ironically it seems to only be willing to offer it up if evenly loaded. Due to it's crossload "issue" I wouldn't suggest video cards as high as x1900's unless the 3.3V and 5V rails are satisfied with hard drives, PCI cards and/or some USB devices. That's right: Feed the power supply with more stuff to power and the power supply will actually perform better.

Otherwise, you're only going to see the performance of a typical 450W PSU. So if you only plan on having one hard drive and an optical, you might want to keep your video card choices limited to a pair of Nvidia 6x cards or ATI x1800 cards.

If you're looking for something with power factor correction and decent efficiency, you're not going to find it here. But if you like the mirror finish of the X-Finity housing and the UV reactive FlexForce cables, this is probably the nicest lookng 600W power supply you're going to find.

7.5/10. Definitely NOT something worth putting in your PC.

As far as I can tell, there were at least two "Ultra X-Finity 600 watt" PSU's built. Does yours have 2 80 mm fans or one 120/140mm fan?

So, in essence, I need to plug in as many things as possible, then it should (potentially) work properly?

I'll give it a go

MOST Ultra PSU's, including the one that the OP has, are Wintec built units...
BTW, OP, where in "WA, next to ID" are you at?

i dont know, ultra psu's might not be that horrible. a few years ago i was made out to be a complete idiot for suggesting to NOT buy an ultra. of course he didnt listen and went with the "chrome one". never heard from the guy again. i assume the psu shot sparks out onto his curtains and his house burned him alive.

Well hooked up as many items as possible but still the same issue - in the bin it goes I guess - still weird that it gives all the right values though....

I have to admit I've heard a lot of stuff about different PSU's over the years.

Funniest experience I had was while living in Hong Kong and picking up a PSU at the Golden Compter Centre Market for around US$7 somewhere in the basement area. That PSU ran for around 10 years in various systems....it's probably still going today.

Funnily enough, my pal bought the exact same PSU from a different vendor (same labels and appearance at least!) for probably 10 times as much
