Ultramax prison idea, job creation!

I think this is an excellent idea.

Build an ULTRAMax prison that can house up to 10 million inmates in the middle of nowhere, No Cell signal etc..

The ULTRAMax prison is only for violent offenders, gang members ie MS-13 etc.. (not non violent offenders or drug users)

The ULTRAMax prison system is a life sentence with optional self-euthanasia option.

The rooms have built in showers/toilet and bed. prisoners never leave the cell once they are put in. Food provided to them are food units, ie cubes that represent 1 full meal. They can be mass produced and make no mess.

Prisoners can elect self-euthanasia at any moment. They would press and hold down a red button for 15 seconds. This would initiate a light at the outside of the cell indicating "euthanasia requested"

The wardens would see this and would insert a key that activates the process. The prisoner has 10 minutes to elect not to follow through. Once the 10 minutes passes it goes into fail safe mode.

The process would be as follow, Nitrous Oxide would fill the cell, then carbon monoxide. The room would be locked for 2 hours and a red warning sign over the cell would indicate "Euthanasia in process"

Once the process is complete, the gasses are purged and the room filled with clean air. A green light would indicate "Euthanasia process completed"

At this point the body can be removed and sent to the incinerator for disposal.


The Ultramax prison would clear out state and local prisons of the worst of the worst. It would also be a strong deterrent to crime. Finally lots of jobs would be created for the building process and maintenance of this Ultramax prison.

What is the population of NYC?

Better to find an island in the Artic or Southern Ocean, air drop supplies and have an exclusion zone around it

Would be considered cruel and unusual. This is the USA, the scum of the earth get weight rooms and cable TV, not punishment.

If can be done. Right now we have close to 2.5 million incarcerated throught the U.S.

It would be a 30-40 year plan, would provide lots of jobs to build the ultimate prison.

We have the technology and the land to do it.

I say put it in Antartica, or at least in the middle of the ocean. With the environment acting as the barrier, you can spend a bit less on security infrastructure.

I like the idea of using Antarctica though. No need to build, staff or supply a prison. Just drop the prisoners off, wish them luck and leave.

the problem with the island proposals is that prison is supposed to keep people safe from criminals, but that includes other criminals in the same prison.

That's why most countries try to keep control of their prisons (although prison thriller movies show a different picture.... a picture that is correct in most of the world but not in the rich low-crime and low-imprisonment countries that manage to actually stick to the principles).

Internal exile is a solution that was adopted in many countries for people who have finished their prison sentence.

The result: Italy managed to bring the mafia to the north even faster than normal immigration could.

I guess penal colonies could work, but we don't have another australia to colonize, and eventually the society formed that way would stop accepting new ex-cons.

ULTRAmax goes against too many human rights to be implemented.


I'd go with a 41bis-style prison regime worldwide for gang members.
Too bad that the US consider it human rights violating, so they even refused to extradite a mafioso to Italy because of that.

Unfortunately just dropping them off would be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

But building something in Antarctica might be a viable idea.

Depends how much you put in one room, and how big said rooms are. Personally, I think they can be a little more jolly and make the rooms a bit tighter with bunk-mates in each.

Hell, I sacrifice the same living space in Airlines without doing crime. They still want to make it even tighter

I like how everyone is talking about the difficulty in making a prison large enough to house 10M people - and not the fact that in its most basic form the idea is to torture people until they break and they off themselves.
