I'd like to get one mainly for cleaning brass casings and gun parts, maybe for a few other things.

what should I be looking for in terms of specs for the device?

You can get a basic jewelry cleaner model on Amazon for $30. However, you probably want something larger that is also heated. You can get a decent sized heated model on Amazon for less than $100.
