Um... Misshapen P4 Heatplate

Hi again : )

OK, I've been experimenting with the heatsink on my new P4 rig (it's not in the case yet) and I'm at a loss.

I put a nice coating of Arctic Silver on the P4, and then simply pressed the heatsink onto the processor, which was in the MB of course (heatsink had no putty on it to start with, and i've removed the TIM and it's remnants with turps and metho).

When I lifted the heatsink off, there was no putty on it - it hadn't smudged off the CPU, despite me spreading a nice coating of it evenly all over. There was, however, a square border scratched / shined into it about the size of the processor.

WTF?? Then, I look at the P4 itself carefully and I can clearly see the heatplate curves up at the edges! Not all that much I guess, but it definitely rises up visibly at the edges. The raised edges are such that they appear a different colour, because they're at a different angle and aren't reflecting the same amount of light.

Has anyone else noticed this? I think I'll be taking it back tomorrow for another - I think i'll open the new one instore and compare the two. Such a shame, because if it wasn't for that I think this one would have been a great little overclocker - before I noticed the heatplate issue I booted it (1.8) at 2.4 (133 FSB) at stock voltage, in fact it was by accident cause the board powered on for the first time defaulted to 133FSB : )

The temps were damn high for a P4 though - just on 50 celcuis, idling in the BIOS. That's that led me to discover the fricken heatplate not being flat though. : )

Anyone got any ideas on this? It's a strange one, to be sure.

That, or you could lap it to a flat finish like so many of us did to our old PPGA Celerons. Kiss your warranty goodbye if you do, but it will be flat when you're done, and as smooth as you have the patience to make it.

I considered it but I really don't like the idea of metal shavings near my processor. : )

I took it back today and got a new one, it has a nice flat heatplate and has been running beautifully.

Thanks for that advice though.
