Umax 2100U or Visioneer 4400?

Looking to buy a pretty cheap scanner. Which one is better?

As a Umax owner, I'll throw in my Umax support. I was pissed that they didn't have anything to run my Astra 1220S in Win2K, but it turns out that they just didn't support it, I just downloaded the new VistaScan software meant for newer scanners and away I go.

Overall, nice scanner. No problems that are its fault (SCSI stuff).

i used to have a umax... it had some nice software.
scan quality was ok....

but now that i have myu new canoscan N656U i've completely forgot about the umax. i only miss one piece of software which i still use with my cannon anyways, so i don't really miss it
but i like my cannon much better!
it looks nicer, its way smaller, takes less room, doesn't need a power plug... sounds better, seems to scan faster...

so in my opinion, i opt fo the 656u even though it doesnt seem you were considering it.

I just recieved my Umax Astra 2100U the other day. Works well. People say it's kinda slow, but I'm not running a business here, so it's fine for home use. It DOES have good image quality (at least for a 600x1200dpi scanner) and a decent software bundle (including Adobe PhotoDeluxe), so I'm happy with it. Chalk one up for the 2100U. Anyone have any opinions on the Visioneer?

Well, I got the Visioneer 4400 USB for $5 after rebates so I can't complain about performance vs. price.



In comparing it to my old HP 36 bit scanner (that died after a year and a half), my current 42 bit Visioneer is at least as nice a scanner - the Paperport software does what it's supposed to - and the scan quality is just as good. It might be a (very tiny bit) slower than the HP.

The only feature the HP had that I miss is the ability to scan legal size.

Yeah apoppin what's up with that anyway? My UMAX Astra 600S seems to be the last of the affordable legal size scanners. I sure hope it stays healthy (knocking on wood and saying my prayers).

rigmah, if you could choose something else, I'd suggest the AGFA SnapScan 1212U/1212P (P-ending is Parallel connection, U-ending is USB connection). Excellent scanner! Great image quality, good reliability (hasn't broken down yet) and inexpensive.
