TOO LATE! I just bought the ACER one from OM yesterday.

But this one doesn't have Win 2k driver?

Only 199 left. If you look at the product info it says:

Warranty Length: 90 Days
Warranty Notes: Other

Only 90 day warranty, what does Other mean? I tried calling Insight but they're closed and won't open again until 8 AM EST.

Does anyone know for certain if this is brand new or are we just assuming?

Umax scanners have a retail warranty of one year, (I checked) so this must be a refurb. If it goes in the toilet can you bitch about ten bucks? I personally passed on the deal, waiting for a coupon deal on a better scanner. Not a bad deal if you want to try out a scanner and are not sure what to buy.

SimMike2 - I ran into the same dilemma.

Ok is it just me or does this not make any frickin' sense?

1) The UMAX Astra 2010U does not exist in the UMAX scanners product list
2) Searching for 2010U finds no matches.
3) Searching for the manufacturer's part number SPKG-13446 finds no matches.
4) There are no hardware reviews on CNET.com
5) The UMAX product registration page lists the UMAX Astra 2010U.
6) UMAX promotions page lists a $20 rebate, which by the way cannot be combined with Insight's own $30 rebate since they both require the original UPC.
7) There are no Epinions.com reviews of this scanner.

Now for the somewhat good news:
8) Doing a Google.com search finds a few places which sell this scanner.
9) Searching for 2010U at Shopper.com lists many web sites sell this scanner, the lowest being Buy.com for $71.95
10) The manufacturer's part number matches with Buy.com, Onvia.com, Computers4Sure.com, CDW.com

Yet I am STILL not sure that this scanner exists, can anyone provide a review of this model?

Does anyone know for certain if this product is brand new or not?

MontyBurns, since it seems you're the only one that has this scanner, let alone even heard of the 2010U, can you give us some specs on the quality of it? How well does it scan, speed, at what resolution, OCR any good, any problems or anything it's lacking, etc.?

The info would be much appreciated.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Scott Stanek ext.5789 at 1-800-INSIGHT option 3, and he says these scanners are BRAND NEW / FACTORY SEALED

That's all I needed to hear, count me in. Asked him why the 90 day warranty and he said that's what the manufacturer wanted which I don't believe but oh well.

Asked him why the low price and he said because it's the end of the quarter? Uhm, ok. They have roughly 400 available right now of 800 they should be receiving in tomorrow.

Pretty Cool - Can you please update your original post with this breaking news? Thanks for such a great deal this will replace my aging Agfa SnapScan 1212u nicely.

Check the European Umax.com website. They have better information on support and Windows 2000 and such over there. Seems the US site always follows behind really slowly. I have a Vista8 Umax that I love and US sight says not supported by Windows 2000, European site says use Magic Scan 4.3. So I would seem to trust the European site if you are investigating on the thing. By the way my scanner works great under Windows 2000. For $17.xx I might just buy a 2010u.

jdura99 - yeah, you're missing tax and shipping, my total came out to $20.13 (stupid change!)

As for the paranoia about the stupid model #, I think it applies to the bundled software (just like HP drives add a 10 to the number for the software added ie 9110) - if you look at the 2000P on the Umax site, the software doesn't match exactly...

As for it being retail or refurb, it doesn't say refurb anywhere so it dang well better be retail or I'm gonna be pissed.

All I can really say about quality is it's far more than what you would expect out of a $15 or $20 scanner (after rebate.)

The biggest drawbacks: Comes with ultra simple software, scans are slooooow. Again, though, for the price, you can't go wrong. Image quality is much better than the low end Canon CanoScans. I'm really happy with the quality. As long as your patient during scanning, it's a great scanner.

I think I read the the Acer 640U had one of the highest quality scan results.... even though it was the CHEAPEST scanner tested (in PCWORLD, or one of those mags).

I have the Acer 320U. I love this scanner. The preview is lightning fast. The quality was good. The 640U has to be every bit as good with better resolution.
