Unable to get to the internet

I just re-installed xp pro on my mostly new desktop. I just upgraded to an A64 3700+ with an MSI K8N Neo4 motherboard. I only have a Win XP Pro SP1 CD, so I was planning on doing a clean install since I upgraded practically everything but my HD. At one point my old XP installation was connected to my home network and could connect to the internet. After re-installing XP and the drivers for the MB, I can't connect to the internet or my local network.

Ping returns the following:
No DNS Suffix or default gateway
Autoconfiguration IP Address 169.xxx.xxx.xxx
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0

ping to 127.0.0.1 or 169.254.88.xxx works, but everything else gets a destination host unreachable.

Prior to my re-install, the ipconfig returned the ip address that my router gave to my desktop which was 192.xxx.xxx.xxx, and i believe the default gateway was my router's IP.

I even tried the winsockxpfix.exe file i saw mentioned while searching for my problem.

Any help or suggestions on this problem would be appreciated.

The computer can not connet and obtain an IP from your DHCP server (hence the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP).

My guess would be a Ghost Drivers problem with the new nic.

In General you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two ? Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify
If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

Thx for the quick response, but no luck so far.

I tried each of the steps above with no real progress. There was a ghost installation problem (my usb scanner, which i havent re-installed yet).

I then retried the above steps again with no luck, but I am now having a new problem with the Network Connections property window. Ipconfig would return the IP address, mask, and gateway that I specified, but I could still not ping the router or my other computer.

Prior to removing the ghost device, running the winsock fix, and lsp fix, I changed the TCP/IP properties fine(manually assigning the IP, mask, and gateway). Now it looks like local area connection properties window is hanging. I've waited for over 15 mins with no change (it doesn't take more than 2-3mins tops before).

It looks like all devices/drivers are installed correctly according to the device manager.
Any more suggestions?

Update: As of this morning something must have fixed itself after turning off the desktop. There is still no connection to the internet, but it can now ping the router and my other computer.

Ipconfig still returns the IP, mask, and gateway that I set with no connection-specific DNS suffix.

if you can now ping your router, change back to DHCP. I would guess at this point you cannot get internet because of DNS
