For the last few weeks, i have had difficulty waking up in the morning whenever there's no roommate to make noise in some way. I have missed a few classes and nearly jeopardized my semester.

This happens although i:
-Got to bed very early for two whole weeks
-Have set 4 differents alarm clocks throughout my room (watch, cellphone, radio, travel clock)
-Have had my parents call me
-Set the window so that the sun would get in my room every morning

But i just ignore pretty much anything that makes a sound i'm used to.

So right now i am looking a a few things that might be wrong:
-Not getting enough of the good sleep phases (sleep apnea ? no one mentionned snoring)
-Just no acquiring sleep discipline in a younger age and it's coming back to bite me in the ass...

I am 26, do most of my exercise biking around downtown Montreal. I am in better shape than i was when i started college 1½ years ago. I do not work, all of my classes are in the morning/afternoon, no girlfriend. I have not seen a doctor on this. So...

Any ideas on what could cause this ?

(And for those looking into my post history, yes i got through my college starting woes, mainly by changing program to Mech Eng)

How much sleep do you get per night? Do you nap during the day at all? What's your schedule like?

I think you can get some alarm clocks that physically wake you up either by shaking/vibrating or maybe squirting water at you.

What time are you classes? What time are you going to bed? What is your diet?

I dare say that if you literally have an alarm clock that is bleeting out its sound or loud music and you're still not waking up, there is something seriously wrong with you. Get an MP3 alarm clock on your computer, hook it into speakers, and blast it when it's time to wake up.

I have always had this problem. I have a hard time waking up on my own.

What I do is self-hypnosis as I am laying down to go to sleep. Just say to yourself over and over again in your mind "wake up at 7...wake up at 7...wake up at 7..." until you fall asleep.

This works great when I absolutely have to wake up on time, for an early meeting or something. The problem is it loses its effectiveness with constant use so I can't rely on it every day.

Diet: dropped the caffeinated beverages 3 months ago, only having a coke or pepsi once every 2 days on average. Food has been plenty, i have maintained my weight or the past 1½ years but it's near the overweight mark. I do eat my daily vegetables, (V8 with a meal helps a lot on that) but i do bust my daily sodium limit sometimes on a single meal.

Sleep: I get about 7-8 hours, whenever i try to get more, i usually can't. The only dreams i remember are usually ones in the beginning of the night. i do have some afternoons off during the week and i often end up using them to get some sleep (a full sleep cycle, like 3-4 hours). Whenever i do that i fall asleep on my back and wake up in the same position, often without disturbing stuff i left around said bed. Any headaches i get are triggered either by some food i now avoid or by lack of sleep, and those long naps are probably what keeps my tylenol pot from getting used to the max dosage on some days.

The more i type the more i believe i'll just need to go spend a night at the local sleep clinic. And that takes a doc's referal, looks like it'll be a while, so i might as well try a few tricks. I'll be recording myself tonight hoping not to see high peaks in the sound.

Hmm, since your diet is pretty clean, I'd definitely say go see a doctor. For most people it's just a matter of eating better, doing some exercise so their body is tired, and going to bed at a decent hour for a week. But since you're pretty much doing that already, I'd say definitely go see a doctor ASAP!

Update: recorded myself sleeping using the computer (Audacity worked the whole time!) It caught every single time i moved around into my bed but no snoring or weird breathing that i could find (was looking for peaks in the sound). So i'm looking to see a doc...
