I just bought a new HD and I installed windows. Unfortunately I couldnt use my old hd to boot because of a failed sp2 installation. Make a long story short, I connected my old HD to transfer over the old files, but I am unable to access my user folder. It says there are zero bytes in it but access is denied to it (all other folders are accessible) and the files are definately there. I know this because the drive shows 1 gig free and It shows 40 gigs used when I select all folders and view properties. If anyone has had something similar or knows how to access them, please respond. I have a lot of valueable stuff on my old desktop and desperately need to access them. Thanks in advance.

any self booting self running recovery disc like Hirens or Barts PE or Avast BartsPE can see the file for transfer
You could also try handyrecovery pro

I dont see

3. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended)
check box.

And I also dont see a security tab when I right click the folder. Are any of the programs you mentioned free?

Its in Tools>Folder Options Uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing". You shouldn't need any third party tools, its likely just a permission issue.

this happened to me before, follow these steps:

- like the guy before me said; disable simple file sharing
- right clikc the folder and go to sharing and security, advanced, and take ownership of the folder...

DONE!

I had a similar problem, I had to boot into safe mode as admin to change ownership for the folder. What a pain in the arse!!

Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab
