Unbelievable Dash Cam footage from multi-car crash in Binghamton, NY

Luckily, no on was killed in this crazy pile-up in a construction zone on RT-17 east near the I-81 split. I travel this section often when taking my son to hockey games or heading out of town. Scary for sure. The tractor trailer reportedly had brake issues/failure. Local news reported that the driver of the silver tahoe that can be seen in the early seconds of the video being crushed ended up with the tractor trailer bumper 3 inches from his face!

Edit - latest news from our local media outlets is that investigation is ongoing and brake issues may not have been a factor. The truck was VERY heavy (carrying a load of stone) and may not have been able to stop in time,

pretty amazing no one died, someone who works at the same place i do died a cpl week ago when something similar happened, he was the first car hit buy a semi in a very similar accident on rt 15 in PA.

ive seen it almost happen a bunch of times, people in general don't pay attention for shit when there is a lane merger/slowdown - cars end up swerving in all sorts of directions

It looks like the fuel tank of the white car on the left that hit the divider ruptured. If you keep watching the video, good samaritans pull an older woman from the car through the passenger window.

Yikes.... I've driven that road many times when I lived in Syracuse. Of course the truck driver is going to claim brake failure even if it's not true. If he fell asleep, it's brake failure. I'm sure if his brakes are tested and proved to be functional he'll be in a world of shit. I wonder how that works for everyone else's insurance? What a mess.

I kept thinking that I didn't see anyone get out of that vehicle despite the rear half of it being engulfed in flames. Glad they got her out.

What the hell happened here anyway? Looks like that big rig didn't even slow down and just plowed through all those vehicles. Did the driver fall asleep or something?

I used to have them in both my vehicles - I really need to get new ones. I also think the guys you see with the construction vests on came from the work zone (it is an active construction site) where they probably had extinguishers as part of there required safety equipment

After seeing enough videos of people dying in car accident fires, I bought a fire extinguisher to keep in my car a couple years ago. It's just as important as a first aid kit.

I HATE driving in that 17/81 area in Binghamton. Easily the worst section of 81 from Canada down to the PA/Maryland border, and the worst section on Rt-17 in the state. (Most of 17 is now I-86).

edit: yep, as I expected, eastbound, traffic still snarled a bit with the lane closures (6 years now?) for construction.
