Would this card be a good upgrade to a Visiontek GF3 Ti200?

BTW.. I was in the Vernon Hills, IL BB again this evening picking up other stuff that I want to return/rebuy this weekend. I took a look over at the video card shelf and it still had about the same amout of GF4 Ti4200's as last night. Guess they aren't too worried about clearing them off the shelves early.

I also saw big stacks of items on special like the Mag 17" monitor, 48x CD burner, CDR's, etc.. It doesn't look like a big secret or anything that they expect a run on these things.

a little off topic, but could someone mention the video card deal bestbuy had last year? model, price, how long rebates took?

I have a GF3 Ti200 from last year and figure this Ti 4200 would give a 25% increase in performance over that (both overclocked). Is it worth the $100 price (with tax) for that much increase? I'm thinking I could get by with the GF3 for a while and not need this upgrade right now. Anyone else thinking that way or do we need this card now?

I was also wondering if we should use the 10% magazine coupon or if Best Buy could reject the mail-in rebate if they see the 10% reduction. Someone mentioned that possibility in an earlier post. I just don't want to risk missing the $55 MIR.

I never actually rec'd mine. Where's my Rebate allegedly sent it ...
For Pete's sake.. Get on the horn with em' man! Call the rebate number and if you don't get any satisfaction, call Best Buy's rebate center. They were late with my rebate, so I called the rebate center and they cut a check that day.

Well I think it should be, if you got the money, it would be a bigger increase than 25% though, more like 50% at they very least! perhap something clsoer toa 75% increase in performance.

Well i got that card ordered to a different area now, that actually had it in stock, something that amazed me is tehy actually have the minimum of ten not on the shelf, they are holding them back, for the sale, but some stores have more than 10 total so the extras are out on the shelves. I oredered mine, so it should be sitting, waiting for me to come get it on friday, since I got a confirmation that it is being held for 7 days for me to pick it up I suppose I can assume, that I ill be able to get it and rebuy it, instead of hiding it in a washing machine or something lol, this way I only need to take 1 trip to bestbuy.

re: return/ rebuy.... how does this work, exactly? You return it and they let you immediately buy it back while in the 'returns' line at the new price?

In theory yes, in practice BestBuy might be cracking down and refuse to do it. We already have one member stating that the BestBuy they worked for won't allow it.

i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to deals...so how does this return/rebuy thing work...if i'm at the cs desk and talkin to the csr do i tell that i wanna return this and buy it? or return it and then snatch it back or play follow the box to get it back? and wouldnt the csr just try to tell me to pricematch that sucker rather than return/rebuy?

Strangely, the 4200 video card has vanished from the web site. I guess they do not want any more orders for "in store pickup". I got mine 2 days ago, and I will stroll in tomorrow and get my return/rebuy.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Anandtech forum menbers!!

It still shows up here for me at the new price, but not available for ordering or pickup.

So this would probably be a nice upgrade to a GF 2 with 32Mb? Do you think I'll be cpu bound with a 1Ghz P3 and this 4200 board?

Bring the card with you when you go to BB, but leave it in the car. Go in with your receipt only, and tell them that you saw the current price has an IR and MIR, so you would like to get the current price. Handle all the paperwork, and you don't even need to have the card in your hand. If they start to pull things on you now like not giving you the rebate, or just changing the price without a return/rebuy, then you gotta prepare for war. I would guess that they won't give you any hassle since the card would have been bought anyhow, they are just updating the price for you.

The GF4 is a big leap from the GF3- Full hardware T&L, ability to run antialiasing without a performance hit, DV AND TV out.....it's an excellent upgrade.

BTW- I prebought mine again this year. Gonna price match tomorrow.

That's what they all said last year. I don't think anyone had a problem with it either.

Well, for one I hope they don't honor return/rebuys. It really sucks for all those guys that are going to be waiting in line for this deal only to find a bunch of people strolling in and return the card they bought last week and rebuying it at the special price. I don't need the card, but their is a difference between a hot deal, and being a prick.
I asked a guy at BB yesterday about this and he said what may happen is they might just not allow you to rebuy the same card you returned. It would just go in the back, and maybe back on the shelf the same day. This was BB in West Covina, CA.

....and I'm going to be rubbing it in your face when I do it tomorrow. BB hasn't changed their return or price match policy, so they'd have to be breaking their own rules if they didn't do it. If they don't, I'll just return it and make them feel like idiots when I do.

they aren't breaking their own rules if they just refund you the difference and you are left with the receipt not qualifying for rebate.
it all depends on the manager or its workers.

so i get the rebate at the register?? not some form or downloadable pdf?? essentially if i just get it pricematched i wont get the rebate...but if all goes well i will have a new receipt with the correct date for rebate submission?

EDIT: nevermind...BB is closed today ......why could i wake up and go out yesterday

I was thinking exactly along these lines although I'm really a noob at this level of discount strategies. I figure to have it in my trunk and walk in with the receipt and figure I will probably be able to handle the whole thing at the counter. I will try to be patient. I'm sure they will be real busy tomorrow and they won't be in a mood to stir up a hornets nest ("war", as put above). I think it's important to buy (rebuy) after 11/28, though, so you're eligible for the rebate.

My girlfriend is an advertising attorney. She took a look at the ad, and pointed out that the first page has the heading "6 AM 'TIL NOON", and all of the items on that page have "FRIDAY 'TIL NOON" on the yellow price tage next to them. Nowhere on the video card page does it mention anything about the deal being Friday morning at all - the yellow tag next to the video card only says "$89.99 After Instant & Mail-In Rebates". According to her 'professional' opinion - "the video card is clearly on sale all day Friday and Saturday, not just Friday morning". Otherwise, they would be violating bait and switch laws, which would never have gotten past the ad's legal review. So, if you can't find a parking spot until 12:01 p.m. on Friday, you should still be okay. And if the shelves are bare of these things on Friday, try again First thing Saturday morning, because if they don't honor the return/repurchase deal, I have a feeling they are going to have a bunch returned on Friday to restock Friday night.
