You know, the really sad thing about this is that with the debut of the 9500-Pro (which blows the 4200 into the remote ancient past, and is faster than the 4600 in some benchmarks), the price of the geforce 4-4200 is going to plummet. In a few months the price will be $89 without rebates!!!

I waited in line at BB in ElPaso one year and decided that unless they were giving away women and guitars I was not going to EVER do it again.

the same can be true for just about everything else computer hardware related. if u keep playing the waiting game for the next latest and greatest for cheap... u will never get anything.

Not sure what the point of a faster card would be. The 4X00 line can already play nearly any game at 1600x1200 @ 60fps. What more do we need? We need a new generation of games to take advantage of what we already have!

Got in on the TI-200 deal last year. Didn't really pay for the minimal performance gain to get up at 5am to get this card. But Congrats to those who did.

i just got back from with my ti4200.
i was like 15th-20th in line, luckily, people in front of me and my friend were mostly looking for something else.
after waiting 1 1/2 hours starting at 4:30, i went straight to where it ought to be and grabbed one.
there were actually like 15 on display, but they were gone within 5 minutes.

btw, i used the 10% off coupon on the card
because i also got some free cdrs, they made an error and gave me $10 more off
it's going to be $75 for both after rebate and tax, sweet.

OK, here's my story...

Got up @ around 9 AM and took a trip over to the Best Buy over in Secaucus, NJ. Went to the CSR line (THANK GOD it was short, that place was MOBBED!). Anyways, after waiting about 15 minutes, I was 1 guy away from the counter. Got into my 'rebate' mode, and walked with the BB ad in one hand, receipt in the other....

After everything is said and done, I received my IR and the MIR printed out. But, I felt uneasy because the receipt that she gave me had the words "PRICE MATCH" on top. So, I asked the CSR girl and she said that they will accept it for the MIR. STILL, I felt uneasy, so I decided to ask another CSR person. Before I can belt out my question, she chimed in and said, "YES, I TOLD YOU THEY WILL ACCEPT IT!". Kind of rude, I though. Anyways, STILL uneasy, I decided to give BB a call. TWICE, I called them and BOTH times they said NO-GO on that MIR with a PRICE MATCH receipt. So I said, "Screw It". I'll go to another store, this time in Paramus. Drove up there and went straight to the CSR counter. Told the nice CSR girl my story, but she had to go get the Manager. In the end, she said, and I quote "Send it in with the PRICE MATCH receipt. If they deny your rebate, come back with the letter stating so and we'll honor your rebate. Oh, and make sure you have photocopies of everything."

Well, now I ask you fellow ATer's, should I buy into this, or should I just return the item? I'm so torn right now.....

To all those folks saying that the card was not a good deal because prices are falling, etc. Were you ever able to make a choice between beta or VHS? C'mon. You can wait forever for the best deal or you can buy something now.

Just remember the following rules:

1. If you can afford the technology, then the technology is obsolete.

2. The moment you buy anything, something that is better, cheaper and faster will appear on the market the day after your last chance to return it.

3. Enjoy what you bought and be happy with the deal. Later on, you can be sure of finding a deal on something to replace it.

P.S. I cannot figure it out why people in this forum are saying that they waited in line at store XXX last year and were not going to do it this year. Haven't they learned anything from this forum? The ads were posted last week. Buy early and pricematch on Friday. It's worked for me for two years now.

No. Insist on returning it and rebuying it. BTW.. Does your price match receipt have todays date on it or was the original sale from the other day? If it doesn't have todays date on it as the original sale, there is no way that you will get the MIR if it says price match on the receipt or not.

Dude... how much time have you wasted and how much stress have you put yourself through worrying about a $55 rebate? This is now a cold deal for you because of the time and energy you put into it. Take this as a lesson. Next time, instead of doing it the weasel way and pulling this prebuy-return routine, go to the store early and stand in line like everyone else and rest assured when you buy your card you're doing it the fair way and will get your rebate. I don't feel sorry for you, I feel sorry for the guy who got to Best Buy at 4am and stood there for 2 hours in the cold, only to find an empty shelf by the time he got in the store because there wasn't enough stock due to all the people doing prebuys.

Take this as a lesson. if you can't stay in line at 4 am in the morning, you aren't a real shopper
you have to be there to experience the thrill of getting the card.

The Price Match receipt has today's date on it. Anywho, I'll head on over to the local PC show they have today around my town. It's right across the street from BB. If push comes to shove and I see a better deal at the PC show, i'll return it. Otherwise, it's back to BB I go.

as for the compute rshow idea... i rarely ever find great deals at computer shows. the ones i been to... the pricing is on par with online prices. the pro is that i don't have to wait for it to ship... the con is that with tax... price isn't all that low as one might expect.

From last year experience, some of the Pricematch receipt got denied for rebate, while most of the Sale or Exchange receipt went smoothly, so its your call. As for all the disgruntled people here, just ignore them. They're just upset that you got the 4200 without having to spend hours waiting in line

I went to the new Best Buy in Boynton Beach, Florida this morning at 6am. The store has only been open about 3 weeks so the crowds were small, only about 200 people. I think not so many know it is located there yet. I walked back to computers and there were 3-4 cards left, I snagged one along with free after rebate cdrs, cheap dvd player and checked out. I got the CSR to take a printed Office Depot $15 off $75.00 coupon, so the card will be about $74 after rebate, sweet. I am going to return the one I had sitting in my car trunk that I bought tuesday. Much easier to just buy one today and not have to deal with cust. service trying to get a rebate proper slaes slip.

PS moved on to Office Max for 7 am opening, the rats had only 2 DVD burners on the shelf, only 2!! I did get the 200 cdrs and DVD drive free after rebate.

Then went to Wal-Mart, where it is the only place that the layaway line is longer than the check-out lines.

There is something to that. Can't knock the thrill. However, people who do prebuys... presumably, it's up to the store to make sure they have 10 for the sale as guaranteed in the ad. Therefore, if they sold them to you a few days before, presumably they made allowances for that.

I've found that the prices at computer shows are generally worse than what you can find online if you do any looking around. Also, most of what they are selling is a little out of date. It seems to me that a lot of times they are trying to get more from you than the merchandise is worth in TODAY's market. The clientelle is not that sophisticated about what's available and what you can get it for or they would be buying online. This is not categorically true, but I think largely it is true.
