1) AC Unity represents a next generation gaming experience;

You were wrong. The next generation of gaming graphics is just getting started and we haven't even seen the true potential of PS4.

It's looking good (one of the reasons I grabbed PS4) granted it seems to be more of the same game-play wise but that's about 70 percent what I like about the franchise.

Yeah the gameplay should remain about the same because it worked well. The game looks amazing. The environment they showed was well done and detailed.

They use cookies for the flash light and his shadow is very basic. The lighting isn't high end, but they hide it really well. They are masters at making it look amazing without high end hardware. IMO, Tomb Raider for PC looks better technically. Better lighting and shadows, but it does not look as good artistically. I'd rather look at Uncharted, but I can see where they had to make concessions for the console.

The was a bug with waterfall. You could look below the surface. There is still a lot of work to be done.

It looks amazing. Seems like they are going after Crysis 3.

Little Jaguar APU is showing its claws. Sadly I will have to do with twitch streams if consoles don't get cheaper after holiday season.

I disagree about tomb raider. The environment is very bland in tomb raider compared to this footage IMO. Plus the definitive edition on console has better effects than PC anyway.

I just saw it on YouTube and it looks amazing. This is why I like naughty dog. They really know how to make a game look good with great gameplay.

Makes me want to replay the last 3 but I no longer have the ps3. Really can't wait for this to come out.

Looks, yes... But I'm one of the few who doesn't understand all the Naughty Dog love. I played the first Uncharted, but was glad to be done with it by the end. Got a halfway through the 2nd one (maybe) but never finished because it was getting boring and repetitive. I waited for the ps4 release of The Last of Us, but after 4-5 hours of wondering when I was supposed to start enjoying myself I traded it in.

Not everyone enjoys those type of games. Last of us is more story focused and you have to kind of get into the story and feel for the characters. Uncharted is more about action and adventure and I've always enjoyed those type of games. It reminds me most of tomb raider and I enjoyed that too. I'm also glad I got an Xbox one so I can play that exclusive tomb raider game coming out later.

I liked uncharted 3 out of all of them. The first was decent too.

What did they pull off? Using rendering tricks and shortcuts to give the illusion of "next generation" graphics, as others have noted?

I own a PS4 and there isn't a single game that wowed me graphically. It's pretty sad that a new console in its first year cannot attain, let alone surpass, it's PC counterpart in terms of graphics quality. Nearly all games that are cross platform ship with PC specific graphic options just not feasible or doable on a PS4. Naughty Dog using rendering shortcuts on a weak AMD APU isn't going to change that.

What rendering tricks? The level of details in cut scenes, faces/facial animations, foliage, upclose fighting scenes -- all real time graphics. This blows Unity away and it's just the start of a next generation. You can say cross-platform games are not that impressive on PS4, but looking at Infamous SS and Uncharted 4 shows the console still has a lot of untapped potential. However, even with quad-SLI 980s and a 5960X @ 4.5Ghz, you would be hard pressed to find many better looking PC games other than modded Crysis 1-2, Crysis 3, modded GTA IV, Doom 3 and Skyrim. If Sony's first parties had access to the type of hardware we have, they would make the best looking games. Give Ubisoft or EA 6 Jaguar cores and 7850 GPU maximum and see what kind of game they can make.

Look at Unity, Watch Dogs and Far Cry 4. Even without catering to PS360 consoles, they failed to make any of those games look and feel truly next generation. The leap is not there given how incredibly powerful PC hardware is today.

PC gamers have kept saying for months now that PS4 is tapped out and that Unity maxed the console out. This game is much better looking than Unity on PS4 and it's literally Naughty Dog's first attempt at making a native PS4 game. They were able to make significant gains in graphics with moving from Uncharted 1-->3 and then TLoU on PS3. By the end of the generation we will see even better looking games on PS4.

Right now on the PC the claims of next gen are primarily related to the hardware requirements and are not all at commensurate with next gen graphics. Far Cry 4 still hasn't even surpassed Metro LL or Crysis 3 in its genre. 2014 has been anything but pushing the envelope for PC graphics.

Also, looking back on PS3/360, no game made on those consoles even approached Crysis 1 and for the first 2 years almost all the PS3/360 games looked like crap. Uncharted 4 already looks better than 97% of all PC games ever made and given how much more powerful PC hardware is now, this is hugely impressive.

What's sad is people like you who have to try to over analyze everything and attempt to find a flaw in every game or compare it to a PC.

I think we all know that a console is not as powerful as a custom pc. I don't know what you mean though, many cross platform titles looked good on the console with subtle differences. Killzone looks great, last of us remastered, infamous, they look just as good as a game on pc. But maybe because I'm not looking for all the aliasing, every detail turned on, etc. I'm playing and enjoying the games.

Weird I never felt that way. Some places had annoying shoot outs but in this one it seems you can take different paths around a level. So it may not be just straight gun fights all the time.

I'm not sure what PC gamers said the PS4 is tapped out. Unity is broken no matter what system it is on. Anyone who says a console that's only one year old is "tapped out" was probably born in the late 90's and hasn't ever been through a console's evolution through a generation. Even changes we never know about to the developer's SDK can have a huge impact on what they can do.

You can see the "tricks" they used. The global lighting is static and baked into the environment. You don't see trees waving with their shadows following their movement. His shadow is muddy. The foliage does not do traditional self shadowing. It looks to be blob shadows in the general area of a lot of foliage. His flashlight uses a basic cookie. The textures are limited in quality. IMO the biggest thing I can tell is the lighting. The world looks amazing, not doubt about it. Its a beautiful game, but it has more to do with Naughty Dog's incredible ability to hide technical limitations and produce great visuals.

I think you misunderstood. I agree that this game looks better as a whole, but I can see that Tomb Raider uses more effects (especially shadows.) This is actually a plus for Naughty Dog. They managed to out do Tomb Raider's visuals without having to use as much computing power, very impressive.

I think the point was that some people had it in their head that the games would never get any better looking and the limitations were too great. At least that's what I figured was meant.

It's very early in the console's life time to make the claim that it won't get better. Look at how good gta 5 looked on ps3 for that system. I believe as time goes by we will see improvements.
