Uncharted... Really ticking me off

I've opened a PS3 for years now and finally I am getting around to playing the Uncharted games. A friend from work lent me both 1 & 2. I've played for a few hours now. The environments and the story/voice acting is pretty good, but the game play itself is just ticking me off... The aiming itself has some kind of weird acceleration that makes it really hard to land shots. I've played other console 3rd person games like Gears of War, and Vanquish and had no problem at all aiming in those games. The combat is just a royal pain. You are rarely ever given enough ammo for a given situation. You have the ability to do some melee combos, but you can never get close enough to an enemy to use them. The enemies themselves take an obscene amount of rounds to kill. Five torso hits from an AK-47 should be enough to take down a standard enemy. Especially since every fight is the same. Enter an empty room... room suddenly floods with enemies... enemies flood you from all directions.... Then figure out how the developer wants you to exit the room, rinse repeat. The camera is also terrible. Sometimes you lose direct control of the camera and it will be pointing at some terrible angle so that you cant see where you're jumping.

I really hope that they have fixed some of these issues in uncharted 2 & 3. I am really having a hard time understanding how a game with such critical acclaim can be so very frustrating.

LOL. Also the cover system. Again don't know if this was fixed in later games, but sometimes Drake will refuse to take cover even when standing next to a wall pressing the cover button. Other times he sticks like glue to a wall when you are trying to run or dodge. So annoying....

this is why they have an easy difficulty level ... so noobs like you who don't know how to aim and waste ammo can kill enemies in 2 hits w/out them having any accuracy.

camera is like 95% in your control except for a few areas, and those areas i've never hard a problem with view.

I don't know about the third one but they didn't fix it for the second. I vastly preferred the first game to its sequel.

For all the good things that the series has going for it, gunplay isn't one of them. It's the one thing that the games would be better off with in smaller doses.

Yeah I have gotten a little bit more used to the controls, but they are still not as sharp as I would like.

Uncharted 1 drove me nuts. I hated the constant gun fights, and I agree that the aiming is a total pain in the ass. I almost hated Uncharted 1 by the time I was finished with it.

The 2nd one was incredible though. I loved it. I've got the 3rd one on deck for a rainy day.

if you think uncharted 1 and 2 were bad, wait till you try uncharted 3. It has some of the worst aiming I have seen in console games. Most of the time, I found blind shooting without aiming was more effective.

This is why I shelved UC1. 1 hour retarded gunfights only to run out of ammo. And yes, it is painful to think about reloading it and playing.

I liked uncharted. I thought it was the best game since counter strike.

What you're missing is that most games actually have a subtle auto-aim/aim assist. It appears that this is missing in uncharted.

Since uncharted is equal parts plat former and shooter, that is okay by me. Makes it challenging. Also encourages you to use exploding barrels and such.

I am still working my way through Uncharted 1 slowly. Your post gives me hope that I will enjoy number 2, and I hope I do. The game has a lot of positive points, but the controls are aggravating to me. I guess some people are good with them/it doesn't bother them. There is definitely something off about the aiming. The crosshair seems to go the direction of Drake rather than the camera, which is opposite of other games I've played. The aiming is also really slow (even at max sensitivity); if an enemy catches you by surprise it's hard to react quickly. The cover system is getting under my skin as well. I try to dodge-roll and instead get grappled to a wall right in the line of fire. So frustrating...

Uncharted 2 blows Uncharted out of the water. Just stick through the first one to get to the gold.

I actually played Uncharted 3 but haven't gotten around to playing 1 and 2 so I can't speak for that yet. Everything in the 3rd is really tight and I'm having a blast in competitive multiplayer. Most people say that the second is the best in the series so I can't wait to play that.

I don't remember ever running out of ammo in Uncharted 1 or 2, but I am one of those people that finish Resident Evil with a few guns I've never used because I conserve so much.

that's probably because you know how to aim. i didn't really have any trouble aiming in any of the games, other than the ps3 analogs just sucking. but i'm used to that already.

The Uncharted games were alot of fun and i enjoyed them except they also annoyed the crap out of me in some places
All 3 games had that stupid run along a wall holding a vine/rope and jump to some ledge thing. I actually quit UC1 at the fortress because after atleast 50x i could not do it.

UC3 was fun for the most part except the annoying camera angles at times. Having to run away being chased by bad guys having to do fancy jumps, all the while the camera is facing you so you are effectively running backwards and cant see where you are going.

Actually now that i think of it. both UC1&2 i quit before finishing.
The wall in UC1 and boss fight near end of UC2
Only completed UC3

I just started Uncharted 1 and am not enjoying the gunfights, but the story and non-gunfight elements are keeping me in the game. I've been playing on normal and will probably drop it to easy just to get through the gunfights more quickly because it is so annoying.

I feel ya. I had to struggle to get through the first one. But the 2nd one is totally worth it. Just the other day, IGN named Uncharted 2 as the best PS3 game available.

just goes to show you how worthless IGN and it's scores are.

uncharted 3 got a perfect 10, uncharted 2 got a 9.5 ... but uncharted 2 is the best game available according to them...

I am midway through Uncharted 3, and I can say if it was not for the graphics, stellar story and characters, I would declared this game a huge pile of poo. The controls, camera and gunfights are all terribly handled. And having played through 1 and 2, I must say it was not this bad in those 2 games.

advertising $ will buy you anything. Well, except if your game is Kane and Lynch. Then it will only cover taking down the bad review and firing the author.

Bump for total agreement. I just finally got around to playing this.

I made it to chapter 14 before I just had to give up. I really liked uncharted 1 and 2, but I honestly can't remember those games controls being the TERRIBLE. I feel like the character I'm controlling is drunk the whole time. The aiming is ridiculously poor, and the constant uninteresting gunfights against the dumbest fucking AI I have ever witnessed has ruined the series for me.

How this game got perfect 10's is beyond me. End rant. Enjoy the trash bin, Uncharted 3.

I was very, very disappointed with Uncharted.

The first hour or so was great. I was just getting into what seemed to be a top adventure game, with a cracking mystery-story behind it.

Then the first gunfight happened and it was all downhill from there.

Boring combat for five minutes.
Jumping puzzles.
Boring combat for five minutes.
Jumping puzzles.
Etc.

I didn't finish it, and didn't bother with the sequels.

your loss. Uncharted and uncharted 2 both get much better later on in the game. Nothing else on the PS3 came close to the satisfaction of either. Uc1 and 2 are not perfect 10s but they're certainly amongst some of the best games I've played, shortcomings with the gunfights aside.

UC3? Meh. Story was weak and drake was... not drake.
