dude, i used to do physical modeling on pentiums. we had all sorts of ridiculous midi chains and VST on those E6600. if your synth needs 128 threads, you need a new synth.
also pt was not "a basic recorder". it does synth, midi, plugins, non-destructive editing, real time monitoring, automation, ALL AT THE SAME TIME on two cores. jesus christ protools is the industry standard for recording studios. FILMS have been made on it. Lucasfilm uses it at the skywalker ranch.
i dont think you know what you are talking about.

Ok. Only you know how to use a DAW. Of course I don't know what I'm doing - only spent over a decade working on sound design for film as well studio recording / mixing using PT and many other DAWs. Those people were obviously idiots who paid me to do more in less time with faster gear.

You need to read up on the 2C Audio's Kalidescope efx/synth to understand it's not a kiddies wavetable synth. It could only be created because faster multi-core CPUs were available. You can slag on me, but to slag on 2C Audio demonstrates a lack of awareness of high quality audio efx available.

Anyhow, you're right, because you absolutely need to be. I'm happy to be wrong - be a yuuuge money saver. Hope you can now head over to the Video Card forum and share your certainty that all gamers only need a 8800gtx.

physical modeling is not wavetable synth. it's recreating the oscillations in any virtual object of any virtual shape. you can build a clarinet out of wood, virtually. the tool i used to do this, originally, was the mars station, which had a whopping eight oscillators. amaze. we later managed to replicate it on a pentium. audio is not complex. it cannot be compared to video rendering. there is no reason why you would need any substantial power to do anything, if major daws from 10 years ago can replicate 1:1 any sound in any number at any frequency and any sampling.
Pro Tools HD system requiremements:
    • Intel® PC with Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate 64-bit Editions), Windows 8/8.1 (Standard and Pro 64-bit Editions), and Windows 10 (Home, Pro, and Enterprise 64-bit Editions)
Please find version specific qualifications in the Windows OS Compatibility Grid below.
    • Intel® Xeon® processor
    • 16GB RAM (32GB or more recommended)
    • Internet connection for installation
    • 15GB disk space for installation
    • USB-port for iLok authorization (iLok 2 or iLok 3 required)
    • PCIe slot for HDX or HD Native card (incl. one power connection on motherboard) or ASIO-supported audio device
    • Supports 64-bit AAX plug-ins in Pro Tools
this literally includes every processing option that exists in audio, and it can run them all, at the same time, on any number of tracks.
and while we're at it, low latency is cool if you need to live monitor when you are actually playing, but even then 15ms of delay cannot be noticed.
