Just got bloodwork back and one item that's out of range is Cholesterol/HDL Ratio at 1.9L (seems the L is for Low according to the key at the bottom). I'm looking at http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-...erol/in-depth/cholesterol-levels/art-20048245 and I can't make heads or tails out of the 1.9 figure. So is it good or bad?

I eat home-cooked meals probably 80% of the time now as compared to maybe 50% a few years back (lots of fast food too).

All IN RANGE except as noted

Cholesterol 150
HDL Cholesterol 81
LDL Cholesterol (Calc) 61: below 70 is ideal for people at very high risk of heart disease - so that's good
Cholesterol/HDL Ratio 1.9L (OUT OF RANGE)
Triglyceride 39

I wouldnt worry about the ratio much. HDL and LDL + total cholesterol are probably the most important numbers to follow...are you male or female? HDL ranges are based on gender.

You are fine, continue doing what you are currently doing. If you're under 35, there was probably no point in checking it in the first place.

Sorry...your doctor didn't talk to you about this?

Btw...your numbers are excellent. Every single one. Even your ratio.

I take it you're really thin? Those numbers are good.

They gave me a call the other day and just said everything is normal. Today I asked for a fax copy and I'm just trying to understand why something would show out of range if everything is "normal".

5'10" 150, 36yo. and I eat a lot... just can't gain weight but I want to. I'm actually eating leftover meatloaf/mashed potatoes as we speak.

In a world of good and bad cholesterol, LDL is the bad one. LDL collects in the walls of blood vessels, causing the blockages of atherosclerosis. Higher LDL levels put you at greater risk for a heart attack from a sudden blood clot in an artery narrowed by atherosclerosis.

Getting your LDL cholesterol checked helps determine your risk for heart disease. If your LDL cholesterol is high, treatment can reduce your chance of having a heart attack.

Total Cholesterol Levels
One of the readings you will see from your laboratory results is a number for "total cholesterol." This will tell you the total number of all of the fats you have in your blood. According to the National Cholesterol Education Program: •A desirable level is less than 200 mg/dL (5.17 mmol/L)

•Levels between 200 mg/dL and 239 mg/dL (5.17–6.18 mmol/L) are considered borderline for high cholesterol.

•Levels at or above 240 mg/dL (6.21 mmol/L ) are considered high total cholesterol levels. This may put you at an increased risk for heart disease.
It is important to note that you should not determine your cholesterol levels just by your total cholesterol level. This needs to be further broken down into LDL, HDL, and triglycerides in order to give you some insight into the types of cholesterol that are in your blood.
High Density Lipoproteins
High density lipoproteins, or HDL, are considered to be the "good cholesterol", because HDL’s role in the body is to take cholesterol to the liver for degredation or processing, as opposed to allowing the cholesterol to hang around in the blood. According to the National Cholesterol Education Program: •Any HDL level above more than 60 mg/dL (1.56 mmol/L) is considered high. A high HDL level is considered very healthy, since it has a protective role in guarding against heart disease.

•An acceptable HDL range is between 40- 60 mg/dL (1.04–1.56 mmol/L).

•An undesirable level of HDL is any level below 40 mg/dL (1.04 mmol/L). In this case, low HDL levels may help to contribute to heart disease.

It's likely "out of range" because it's below range (this has happened for several tests for me). If your doc said normal, you're fine.

To be really basic:
LDL=fat going to storage
HDL=fat getting used
The out of range was just because it is really low, but not bad. It could just be their system didn't know what to do in response to it.

The lab's computer probably has a defined range of a "normal" ratio for those with elevated total cholesterol and low HDL, whereas you have the opposite.

If there's one lab value that has yet to be proven clinically meaningful on health outcomes , it's cholesterol levels. Don't sweat it.

There's no such thing as 'bad' cholesterol, only cholesterol that moves towards and away from the liver.

Oxidized cholesterol is the genuine concern, not total cholesterol. Any doctor who states otherwise is an ignoramus who is probably trying to push statin drugs... which are basically poisonous to the liver, kidneys and overall mitochondria.

Cardiologist can be bad for your health, too. I wanted to say 'doctors' but that would be wrong to include all practices in this discussion.

Before stopping any kind of physical chores/exercise, my BP was normal and my LDL was 134. After being forcibly moved from one work shift to another my physical activity dropped to nothing and my BP skyrocketed. LDL stayed 134.

I started on a treadmill for 45-minutes/day with 5-7º incline. BP started to come down and LDL remained unchanged. Dr. suggested cardiologist who said, "If you are seeing me I want your LDL under 100". Please note my diet was 100% red meat for the meat portion and red meat for the non-meat portion.

When asked how many servings of meat do you eat per month I lied and felt guilty providing a low response of 120 servings. I kid you not. Yet my LDL was 134 before being placed on a statin.

On statin my LDL dropped to 70. Unfortunately, it destroyed my ability to walk (treadmill, sidewalk, etc.). It was like someone sucked the lubrication from my knees. This lasted for five years until I changed cardiologist who immediate took me off the statin.

I am now back on the treadmill four times a week, working my way back to 45 minutes at a time (at 35-40 right now) with 5º incline. I feel healthier, much more willing to walk somewhere (anywhere) and can only say the first cardiologist was not attempting to heal me, but maintain their practice.

Now I just need to work on my TriG's.

BTW, I still eat >120 servings of red meat per month, but I do eat white meat, fish (seafood), etc., too. Waiting for the next LDL measurement as it took two full months for the statin to bleed out of my system and the new cardiologist wants me to be in a walking situation for three months before taking new measurements.

4 servings of meat per day?
